handily ignores otherkin reference...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-12 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
okay... if I ignore the otherkin reference... because it does make my mind explode a little... what I get is, "why can't fictional werewolves/lycanthropes be more like real wolves?"

Because humans have been ignorant about wolf and wolf society for years and years and in many ways are still ignorant. I mean in the 70s was when they started studying wolves and then that was in captivity which they learned later didn't mean at all the same thing in the wild. Secondly, human beings are conditioned to fear wolves, peasants hearing a wolf howl didn't think it was pretty, they got scared because a wolf could kill their livestock, their means of survival. And when you corner a wolf, a wolf usually fights back and fighting a wolf off with a pitchfork or a sword or maybe a boar spear is still not a pretty sight since wolves usually come in packs. Plus it is now the vogue to write about tragic bishie monsters?

So, if you want a story about werewolves who aren't beserkers, you might have to write it yourself. Good luck. And I mean that. In fact, I'll race you to the finish.

Otherwise, a friend of mine recommends Raised by Wolves series by Laura Barnes

(you think you're a lycanthrope, werewolves turn, lycanthropes don't, okay if it floats your boat, I have dreams about being a werewolf and it's cool because they're dreams and I know this, but I'm going to go back to not touching this whole otherkin topic.)
