People have believed they have animal spirits for possibly longer than the 'several-thousand-year-old religion' you're talking about has been around.

Just a thought, if that's your metric for authenticity.

Very true. I'm actually kind of disturbed by the number of people here, willing to write off the idea of people with animal souls as some new trendy, aren't I special, thing, or as mental illness. I guess it tells me that most people here aren't well-versed in much of anything outside of the Judeo-Christian realm when it comes to religion.

My issue with the secret isn't that OP thinks they've got a wolf soul, but that they equate that with the media's treatment of werewolves. Werewolves aren't humans with the soul of a wolf, they're something human-like that physically transforms into a wolf-like creature. They are creatures of myth and legend. It's not the same thing, and I think it's ridiculous to think that we should change that basis that werewolves in media draws on to protect the sensitivities of a group of people who might be sort of like the legend, because their soul is animal.
