I've seen it. I think it depends on what fandom you are in? One of my favorite characters, Bela from Supernatural, was bashed a lot. From the moment she and Ruby were announced as joining the cast people were bashing the idea of her. And it continued through her death. Remy "13" from House was bashed all of the time too, although that was at least in part due to people who liked Cameron and didn't like that Remy became the new female on the team. There are more, but here, have two off of the top of my head.

Oh, yeah, the SPN fandom is pretty terrible about bashing female characters. Bela, Jo (until later seasons), Ruby, Meg, Lisa...

The only female characters who don't really get bashed on that show are "motherly" types. Also, I haven't seen Jess get bashed, but she's more of a plot device than a character which is why it kind of weirds me out when people say they hated most of the female characters on SPN except Jess.

I agree. It ended up driving me out of fandom before I quit watching the show entirely.

SPN fandom is horrible about doing this to female characters that are or might be linked romantically with the boys. It makes me sad because there have been some awesome ladies on the show. Bela, Ruby, Meg, Jo, Anna, Lisa (I know a lot of people will argue about Lisa but idgaf, COME AT ME BRO)... the list goes on. Hate for Bela, Ruby, and Meg always really bugs me, since most of the stuff that people hate with those characters is things that they LOVE in characters like Crowley, Lucifer, and Gabriel. And I love those characters, don't get me wrong, but a lot of the shitty things they've done have gotten brushed aside a lot more easily than stuff that a lot of the women on the show have done.

The initial bashing of Bela and Ruby when their characters were announced was because people were convinced they were going to be romantic interests. At least from what I remember reading.

I totally agree. Like one of the things Bela was constantly bashed for was for putting one over on the guys. A) She's a thief who has trained as such for 10 years. B) She did not actually always put one over on the guys. I mean, in the rabbit's foot episode alone she did initially steal it, but the boys managed to trick her at the end. Yet, somehow, people love that Gabriel is always doing things to the boys. Like with the whole "Mystery Spot" episode. Among other things. (FTR, I both loved Bela and "Mystery Spot.")
