I think Cersei is interesting, too, and the way fandom hurls slurs at her troubles me deeply.

But on the other hand, while Cersei started off strong, by Joff's death I feel Martin had already pretty much thrown her character into a very unfortunate direction.

She is not just ruthless, she is a monster. In the books, it really felt like her children ceased being a factor in her primary motivations a very long time ago, she's mostly been in this downward spiral of alcoholism and incompetent egomania for an excruciatingly long time.

So while I feel for her in a lot of different ways, her more recent characterization leaves me little to connect with and little to grab onto that isn't buried deeply in the past, and I can understand why a lot of people really don't end up liking her at all.

And it's all the more disheartening that there aren't very many places her character development can really seem to go.
