I don't see why you should feel bad about that? She's not my favorite character either but she's pretty cool, and more to the point, I don't see why you should feel bad if pretty dramatic changes in the show make you want to stop watching it. That's... perfectly logical.

Especially since those changes have (IMO) corresponded with a pretty dramatic change in quality.

Yeah, me too. And it didn't help that the reasons behind *why* she left the show (outside of universe) were bullshit.

What were the reasons?

I don't have inside info or anything, but essentially, CBS didn't want to pay Paget Brewster. They don't want to spend money on the show so they keep jerking around people and firing cast members they think cost too much.

It's weird because it's not like Criminal Minds is an unpopular show - it's not a ratings behemoth anymore but it's at least a workhorse and it's going to kick ass in syndication for them, so while it is at the end of its natural life span, I don't understand why they'd want to play hardball with people. It's very strange. Again though I'm not too well versed in the whole situation

I had not heard/read that! This is one of those shows where I watch but know next to nothing about the behind the scenes stuff. Was this jerking around people the reason AJ Cook left for awhile?

Uh, isn't that old hat by now? That whole thing went down the first time PB (and AJ Cook) left the show (though if I remember rightly PB didn't actually want to come back but CBS forced her back through a loophole in her contract), but this time she left the show because she wanted to do something else. Or was fed-up with CBS, which really, no one could blame her for.

Basically, CBS got the money to produce a spinoff called Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior by firing Brewster and Cook (Prentiss and Jareau). The spinoff ran for one season before being canceled, so both women came back. Then Brewster decided she wanted to focus on comedies instead, so she quit the show. Then I stopped watching because Emily's my favorite character. As far as I know, JJ's still on the show.

I don't believe that Paget Brewster wanted to focus on comedies and that her departure wasn't related to some degree to corporate bullshit from CBS.

It doesn't make sense that way.

JJ is still on the show as of this current season.

(I know the secret's about Emily, but JJ and Emily's issues are really tied together, so please forgive me for talking about both of them.)

JJ and Emily were both let go of the show, with claims that they were costing the show too much. However, given that they were 2/3 of the main, reoccuring female characters on the show (I don't really count Strauss, because while she's there, she's not part of the official team), rumors circulated that they were being let go because they were the two female characters (or they were when I was watching.) I... I kind of believe them? And that tends to color my judgement. Mostly because they also have Thomas Gibson, and Joe Mantegna (sp?) and I'll be switched if they don't get a higher raise, given their acting history.

(It pissed off the writers, and the actors, who thought it was all bullshit, but executives gonna execute. I remember JJ's "last" episode being really good, and being a middle finger to the executives, but it's been a while since I watched it, so...)

Anyhoozle, they got fired, and then they hired a new female character, but no one liked her, and then they brought both JJ and Emily back (Emily had faked her death, rather then actually die, as had been assumed), only then Paget Brewster decided she didn't want to stick around (and who could blame her?), so she left again as soon as she could. It was all a bit of a mess, really.

Why feel bad about it? People stop watching things for lots of reasons. Personally, I'm still watching even though she was my favorite character. But the show is definitely missing something without her there.

I definitely lost interest when she left. I never really considered her my favorite, always thought the team as a unit was my favorite, but I just....don't really care about the show without her character there. It happens.

When she left the first time or the second time? The episodes right after she was "killed off" sucked so bad that I stopped watching too, but after she came back and left again (where we are now), it's really not that bad. It's definitely not as good in my opinion, and I can't find room in my heart for the new woman they have, but I watch weekly again.

i don't blame you. this show has suffered in quality a lot compared to its earlier seasons and the way CBS toyed with its cast, especially the women, was outrageous. she wasn't my favourite but i liked her a lot and i lost interest once she left as well. i still catch it from time to time but i don't feel as invested and i get the feeling that it's living on borrowed time.

I nearly stopped watching it when she left, too. Emily's not even my favorite character (Garcia is ♥ ), but she was still a FANTASTIC character and in all honesty the show hasn't been the same since.

As someone who has slogged through this season, you're not missing out on anything. I swear at this point they have actually have a stock script for at least 50% of the eps and they just slot in and out names of killers, types of murders, names of places and names of cops. And then they just google a """quote"""" to slap on top of it. They had a Terry Goodkind quote in a recent episode. Terry Goodkind. If that isn't a sign of the show being broken at its core I don't know what is.

A Terry Goodkind quote. That makes me weep in shame that I have ever loved this show. I stopped a few episodes into season 8 because I just couldn't take it any more. Season 5 had some good episodes, but everything I really loved was season 4 and earlier. I wish they would just stop.

I really wish I could stop, but I can't break the habit because I've like planned watching it into my schedule, and I vaguely want to see resolution to the character arcs because I still like the characters quite a bit. Ugh. It is so hard to think that pre season 4 there was actually intelligent, interesting, surprising writing on the show, and there was some sort of dramatic tension as well. WHY SHOW WHY. WHY DO YOU HATE ME SO. WHY DO I LIKE MGG'S FACE SO MUCH. Etc etc :(

So glad I quit watching now. I miss this show like crazy and I've always loved how much thought went into the quotes, but that man is both nuts and a hack.

Ditto, OP. She was one of my favorite characters, and while I don't ship anyone on this show, I sort of ship them as a team because they're wonderful. Breaking it up and pulling the kind of lame bullshit CBS did with the various firings (of writers as well as Cook and Brewster) and that lousy spinoff was just too much.

It's heartbreaking how awful the series is now. I don't blame Paget Brewster for wanting to leave.

Yeah, I'm not a regular watcher, but the show's definitely been missing something since she left.
And she was my favorite too! I totally thought she and Morgan would get together.

Apparently I feel like having rocks thrown at me, but here goes:

-I'm glad JJ stayed instead of Prentiss, if only one of them could,
-I didn't mind Seaver all that much, and
-I'm really enjoying Blake.
