And yes, I do agree, OP. Listened to some HTDA stuff and was NOT impressed at all. Trent is wasting his time on puppy love. And for the record, I could care less if he's married or not.

I wanted to like HTDA because I thought those two are so adorable, but... meh. It just isn't my cup of tea and her voice doesn't do anything for me.

I'm glad Trent's getting some puppy love, though. :)

I think it's a low blow to call it "puppy love" - they're married, have a child and another on the way. It's a committed relationship. If only all people were so supportive of their SO's dreams/careers like he is. And he seems genuinely excited for the project, not just humoring her.

He's done a million side projects - Tapeworm, QOTSA, several soundtracks, production with Saul Williams, collaborations with everyone under the sun. HTDA is one more, and I doubt it's all about getting laid for him.

I say this as a NIN fan who isn't that crazy about HTDA either. What I've heard doesn't bring anything new to the table. And maybe Mariqueen wouldn't be where she is now without her husband (although, I don't see what's so bad about that - lots of people build their success on the success of friends/family). But let's not be dismissive of their relationship and support of each other.

You can't really compare something like Tapeworm with HDTA, though. Tapeworm had major players involved, and ultimately it didn't amount to anything. HDTA has official releases, videos and a publicity machine, they're playing Coachella, and the lead singer is his own wife, whose previous music cred consisted of doing vocals for a dinky Los Angeles band (a gig she landed via fucking one of the founders) and being photographed naked for Playboy while holding a guitar.

I'm all for Reznor being happy and I'm glad he's got a family who loves him and a new project that he enjoys, but I can kinda see why fans might give HDTA the side-eye.

I was just giving examples of other things he'd done. I agree that HTDA and Tapeworm don't belong in the any of the same categories other than "Reznor's side projects". But in that broad category, for example, far fewer people would know who Saul Williams is but for Reznor. Reznor put a lot of funding, publicity and support behind Niggy Tardust too, only for it to (monetarily) fail. Ultimately, it will be the fans that determine HTDA's future as well. They are free to side-eye all they want, but no one can act like this is the only act Reznor has tried to raise up from the underground. (Let's not forget that Rob Sheridan and Atticus Ross are also involved in this project, and it's doubtful they're into it for sex from Mariqueen. Although, whatever works for them, I guess.)

Nepotism might be - and probably is - part of the equation. I just get sketched out by the fans that are coming from the sexual/gender side of things. I would just rather side-eye the musical value of HTDA.

Anyway, I was really only annoyed by the "puppy love" bit. We're talking about a marriage here - not a seventh grade boy blowing off his friends to hang out with a girl at the mall.

I don't think anyone suggested that Reznor's never had side projects with less famous musicians, though. That's a whole separate issue from the possible nepotism. Saul Williams may have been less well known than Reznor in the music world, but he was already very well established as a poet and solo artist with a string of musical collaborations long before Niggy Tardust. In comparison, Mariqueen had... West Indian Girl. I know it might look bad side-eye her, but her lack of track record and experience marks her the odd one out just as much (if not more) than her gender, and her relationship with Reznor is the likeliest explanation. He might respect her musicianship now, but what are the odds she'd be fronting HDTA if they were casual acquaintances? Slim to none, I'm thinking. Sheridan and Ross aren't in the project to work with her, they're there to work with Reznor.


As for the rest, I think fans were just being cute about the puppy love thing and didn't really take it as serious commentary on their relationship. He's happy, so I'm happy.

I like HTDA. It's different allright, but isn't every NIN album is different from the other one?
Her vocal may been better, yes. But it really fits the music.

And NIN is coming back now. So what's the problem?

No opinion on HDTA, but... I dunno. NIN albums sound pretty stylistically similar to me. Not exact clones, but recognizably NIN.
