Yeah he's creepy as hell, but I wasn't surprised by his existence. Her delving into more 'real' forms of evil was something she'd really been doing all along. There's a reason people hate Umbridge more than Voldemort, for example. Umbridge is someone we can actually see existing.

I'm confused here. Are you saying that men who do bad things are less realistic than women who do bad things, or that people who act like Umbridge are always female, or that people only think Umbridge is bad because she's female? These are the only interpretations I can come up with of this comment and none of them make any sense.

There's a trend here in which every time a woman is brought up in a negative light by fandom, or hated for being a villain one of the usual suspects will run to the comments arguing that the only reason the reaction is so bad is internalised misogyny. Or they'll make secrets to that effect.

I favor female characters 9/10 times, and Umbridge still garners a... level of rage from me that no other HP character can manage.

NAYRT, but Umbridge is probably hated more because bureaucrats and bad educators like her exist in the real world and never get comeuppance for what they do, just like she never did. You'll probably never meet a Voldemort, but you'll meet an Umbridge (or more than one, frighteningly enough). Her being a woman has nothing to do with it.

If it makes you feel any better, she did get her comeuppance offscreen, as it were; JKR has said she was sent to Azkaban after the Second War. I know that's not as satisfying as it happening actually on-page, but better than nothing, I guess?

Voldemort was Wizard Hitler. There was an actual Hitler.

Yes, Voldemort was loosely modelled on Hitler, but that is the thing, most people are never going to meet Hitler or anyone like him. We don't just sit down and drink tea with some warmongering dictator. So to that extent, while Hitler was certainly real, for many people the sheer force of his evil, especially when they have never actually dealt with it, still makes him unreal.

On the other hand, many of us have met that godawful teacher or that terrible jerk down at the office or other people like Umbridge. That is what makes her awfulness so very real (and because of that so much more hate inducing)

Yeah, but Hitler is just SO AWFUL that you can't really imagine seeing, interacting with, someone like him in real life. You can't visualize him.

Does that make sense?

Voldemort is much more fantastical though.

But even more so it's easier to imagine someone like Umbridge or Fenrir living in your neighborhood or being your neighbor of influencing your life than it is to imagine living with a Hitler. It's just closer to home for your average reader.

Yes, but I've never met a mass-murderer in real life. I have met abusive teachers/bosses, which is what Umbridge was.
