I'm genuinely wondering. I don't ever want to be in a situation where I say something ignorant...because I am ignorant. I want to learn and understand these terms.

Trans* is an attach your own ending thing, and it gets away from the transgender/transsexual debate.

Tranny is an insult, plain and simple. We're talking serious slur here.

The idea behind trans* is that there are several related terms (transgender, transsexual, etc) and there's some computer-y thing where an asterisk after a term signifies the inclusion of anything beginning with that root.

As for why "tranny" is offensive, for the same reason that any other slur is offensive.

I know some trans* people who use 'tranny' as an affectionate term or they use it in a way to reclaim it (like 'queer' was reclaimed by the gay community) - but the way I see it is that it's their right to do that. As a presumably cis person, you (and I) shouldn't use 'tranny' because it is a slur.

It's basically the n- word for trans* people. It's an offensive slur that carries a lot of shitty implications and horrible history.

As for the term trans* itself, I think it's just an answer to needing a generalised and neutral term for transgender/transexual people. I'm not 100% on that one though, so see what actual trans* people have to say about it.
