Re: Public Health

I'm mostly community health, like I said, but I did take an epi course and it was incredibly fascinating. I find biostatistics interesting, too, but I've always been more of a words than numbers person. Epi kind of functions as a middle ground in that regard, with obvious work with numbers that happens, but it's a different type than biostatistics, obviously. There are also some fields like social epidemiology, which can be pretty interesting. Since you're interested in infectious diseases, too, you might be interested in something like clinical surveillance? A lot of the epidemiologists that I know do a lot of community-based research and work with different programs and agencies, so there is the ability to directly affect change and (hopefully) improve people's lives. The healthy neighborhoods project that I mentioned is actually lead by an epidemiologist.

It definitely sounds like the field is something you would probably enjoy! There are some people who go into it wanting to go mostly into lab-based research, but the majority work in areas that are a bit more directly involved with the community and affecting change. I'd recommend looking into a few programs that schools in your area have and getting a feel for the work that students and faculty are doing.

Thanks!

I actually go to a school with a Public Health masters, so I'll look into it. I really want to do Americorps before I get a masters and I was wondering if Public Health was the area I wanted to plan to do in it so I'll go talk to some people because it does sound like something I might like!

Thank you so much <3

No problem! Americorps sounds like a great idea, actually. I know that my program (and several of the other Public Health programs that I'm familiar with) like students to have a bit of experience in the field. It's not a make-or-break factor when it comes to getting accepted, but it definitely doesn't hurt. It might also give you a better idea what the field's like on the ground before spending several years of your life working on a graduate degree.

Good luck! I hope you find a field that you enjoy to continue on in, even if it's not public health. ;)
