Can't talk to my professor

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
There's a computer-based course I'm taking this semester that is divided into two parts. The first half went smoothly, but the second half that started after spring break involves using a certain program. We can either do our work in the computer lab, where the program is installed or we can use the program "virtually" through a remote desktop connection. The lab is only open 10am-5pm M-F, and I'm almost always in another class or at work, or have a prior commitment, so the virtual program is the only opportunity I have to do my work and I end up working at night or early in the morning. The problem is that the program doesn't work very well on my computer. It is always hanging, freezing, or crashing. It takes about 15 minutes just to boot up and I literally have to sit and wait between each move for the program to unfreeze. I end up waiting anywhere from 1-20 minutes, depending on how complicated the move is or how large the project I am working with. It is so slow that it literally takes days to complete one assignment and the professor assigns three or four every week. Sometimes I only have one or two hours to work on the program, then I have to shut it down and when I get back, I have to redo a lot or everything I already did because the program doesn't save stuff like a regular program. Last night I spent six hours working on one assignment and only got about a quarter of the way through. It's the equivalent of having to watch or listen to a 3-hour video that plays for five seconds, then buffers for 10 minutes, and if it crashes, you have to start from the very beginning. I have four other classes and a job. I don't have time to spend hours and hours and hours staring at the computer waiting for the program to work. Last week, I tried to get the assignments done on time and it put me behind in every other class, and I still didn't get it done. I basically have a bunch of assignments I finished after the deadline but never turned in. I didn't speak up earlier about the program giving me problems because I thought maybe I was doing it wrong, maybe it was just the one file I was working on, that I would make it to the computer lab this week and catch up. Next thing I know, four weeks have gone by.

I talked to my advisor today and he suggested I drop the class, but it's really too late, plus I wouldn't have enough credit hours left to be full time, which would mess up my financial aid. He says if I can't drop the class to talk to the professor ASAP, but the truth is, I'm too afraid and embarrassed to talk to him. He's one of those really strict, "everything is due the first minute of class, no exceptions", hard-grading, no curve, "if you don't have at least a 3.5 GPA, you'll be a failure for life" professors. I had him for a class last semester and I got a D-. I must have gotten about a 15 on the final, because my grade was otherwise in the C vicinity. He throws it in my face every time he sees me. I've spent the last two months avoiding him. I don't see the point in talking to him because I doubt it will help. I think he would be willing to help someone with good grades in his classes or someone with unusual circumstances, but not someone he already thinks is lazy and stupid, like me. Even if I got up the nerve to talk to him, I'd rather just take the F without a The Reason You Suck lecture. I would be too humiliated to even go back to class. Maybe that is stupid, but that's the way I feel.

I can't be of much help but I can sympathize. I had a teacher who was very similar mind set who just saw me as a failure because I had to take a semester off and had dropped one of her classes. I also would of lost all my financial aid if I dropped it instead of failing the class. I ended up doing what you did and just took the failing grade and retook it next semester(luckily there was another teacher doing that class too)

So *hugs* I feel for you and I hope you can get sorted.

Could you maybe talk to you head of the department? They might be able to dig out a loaner computer or set you up with the program some other way. If the lab has limited hours and you dont have the resources to mak it work remotely, it's not wven unreasonable for you to request access to the lab at a differen time. doesn't help the larger predicament, but it might help if you were able to go the prof and explain how technical issues were getting in the way of your success, that the technical issues are solved and you'd like to get back on track with the class.

Check what "full time" means for your financial aid. I thought it meant 12 hours when I was in school but it ended up being something like 8 or something. Make sure that isn't the case for you.

If it is, you can still drop the class. Contact the financial office and see what your options are. As for the class, if you're too late for the W, take the I, but check first to make sure you don't HAVE to have that professor again. I had a terrible professor for one of my classes and I ate the I just so I could take the class over with a different one. Seriously, this guy's a dick, stay as far away from him as possible. Even after you give him your withdrawal notice and ask for your W/I, ignore everything else he sends you. You've done your due diligence and if he chooses not to follow through, as long as you prove with evidence that you did your part, it's not your fault. And you don't need anymore awful verbal abuse from him.

You have options. You're not lazy or stupid, you're honestly trying, and people will not think that about you if you're pro-active about it. Find out what you need to do and make it work. I believe in you! :)

For one thing, cancel those prior commitments and get to the lab! Otherwise you'll have the same problem next semester as well.

On the plus side, you'll have a lot of the work done.

There is a third solution though one that might not be viable now... get a better computer. But I'd be shocked if your library didn't let people borrow laptops. Try it on one of those.
