I think it was construed more as:

"Men (Kirk especially) keep control over their inner drives and express them in socially appropriate ways; absent this control, this is what happens."

However I should note that when men get asked questions about rape where the word rape isn't used, an eye-openingly significant percentage of men express they have done it and/or would if given the chance to do so.

So maybe the episode was prescient in the sense of holding up a mirror to men and saying, "This is your idol, the man on whose shoulders 435 lives rest. He is human, flawed, imperfect. Just like you. And just like you, if given the chance to behave inappropriately, he does. So it's all the more important to teach men not to rape."

I really like your interpretation. It's actually makes me feel a lot better than before. I guess I just don't like painting every man as a potential rapist, in a way. Like, great message, just, it paints men in a really weird light I can't get behind.

I don't know. I'm confused now.
