That was just an ill-thought-out effect. What it was supposed to be was Superman flew so fast that he started going back in time, and they demonstrated that by showing the planet spinning backwards. The Earth suddenly spinning in reverse was meant to illustrate the fact that time was running backwards, it wasn't meant to be the cause.
