The trick is that Sully's supposed to be creepy enough to scare kids, but not so creepy they can't sell plushies of him to those same kids. The chameleon, whatever his name is, is just supposed to be creepy.

(On a tangent, my mother owns one of those plushies. She maintains that it looks like my father, although I can't see the resemblance.)

I think they meant in-universe.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah it would have made more sense if Sully was the underdog to Randall.

Amen. Randall spooked the shit out of me as a kid.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Sully wouldn't look out of place on Sesame Street.

Scaring was considered an art form that you had to work hard to do well.

I don't think either of them are scary, nor would I as a kid.
But it's Disney, so...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, this.
Pixar kind of failed to get a good balance between "scary enough looking in-universe" and "cuddly enough looking for merchandise".

I guess he was really super talented to outscare the purple guy. Because I'd piss my pants if I saw a lizard version of the Cheshire Cat crawling on my ceiling.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
He also had to be cuddly enough in-universe for Boo not to be afraid of him when he wasn't working. Randall probably creeped her right the fuck out just by showing up.

Personally I think it's because it's a lot easier to scream really loud when you're being loomed over by a big fuzzy monster than when you've nearly forgotten how to breathe because there's a lizard-thing on your ceiling.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
haha, I like this explanation.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the difference between terror and horror.

Randall is very creepy and menacing looking, he blends into his surroundings, so he definitely scares children but when they see his eyes in the shadows their first instinct is to stay as quiet as possible, maybe try to pretend to be asleep under their covers. Randall probably works his marks up for a good hour just building up their terror levels before finally jumping on their bed and making them let out on big scream.

Sully meanwhile invokes sheer brutal horror. He's a giant horned monster who jumps out of your closet and instantly makes you scream. He doesn't bother with much strategy, just make 'em scream as quick as possible. This also enables him to make MANY more children scream than Randall who has to take his time with every mark whereas Sully is just blazing through door after door.

That's probably part of why Randall detests Sully so much, Randall gets a sick joy out of tormenting children, to him it's an art. Sully meanwhile just wants to get the scream and get out, to him it's a *sport*, he's a jock.

I love this. Yes.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
...I had never looked at it this way but yes, yes, this is perfect.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I love everything about this comment and was just about to type something so similar to it. Sully is so scary because of the sheer brutality of his "attack", whereas Randall relies more on camouflage and stealth. With the two characters just standing there, Randall IS a lot scarier than Sully. But when Sully goes into raging bear mode he's pretty damn frightening because he's being so aggressive and you KNOW his intent is to cause harm on some level, whereas Randall you would still be frightened of but his motives are a bit less clear and you're not sure what he'll do.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
If he were actually scary, this movie wouldn't be very marketable.

Me either, Sully is so fluffy and adorable. I have to resist the urge to buy any and all Sully merch. To quote a completely different franchise "IT'S SO FLUFFY!"

I assumed it was because it was more about their presence, or persona, rather than what they look like. As someone said above, it was compared to an art.

Though, yeah, it might have been nice for them to work on the discrepancy a bit.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-14 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought Randall was cool, for no good reason.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-15 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
There was just a post on Tumblr about this. Definitely agreed. Randall has an awesome and scary design. He was always my favorite.

It's all about Sully having mad skills.
