Yeah, and even the way she ended up saving the kingdom was about femininity rather than fighting (although I'm working mostly from the manga, it's been a v. long time since I saw the movie.)

Well, and now this secret has me realizing -- Kushana has long hair and she's not very feminine and is the typical "warrior woman" fantasy character (though she keeps it braided)

The movie is pretty good but the ending is really abrupt and it gets compressed at the end, mostly because (I think) Miyazaki hadn't finished the manga yet at that time. Either that or just because it's hard to fit all that story into a movie. It kinda sucks because I liked Kushana and Kurotowa and the Torumekians but they get shafted for time

The soundtrack to that movie is the best, unlike other Jo Hisaishi soundtracks, it's heavy on synth -- and it seems like the synth music is used in the scenes with the Ohmu and the miasma-filled forests and stuff, as opposed to general traditional orchestration in the scenes that take place in the Valley and such

I haven't finished the manga, I want to but... just haven't
