But remember, major injuries to a Time Lord = regeneration and erasure. To a human, it means = arthritis and eventually a shorter, non-repeating life.

It had nothing to do with image. It had to do with River not wanting the Doctor to have to deal with the mortality of those he loves.

Well, why the hell shouldn't he? He's an adult, he should be expected to act and be treated like one. And if he can't, that's entirely his problem.

The Doctor dealt with the mortality of his entire species, his entire family, all of his children, Romana, Susan, and god knows how many friends and fellow soldiers during the war. Not to mention everyone else he lost before and after. He doesn't need to be coddled like a toddler.
