Another option is to volunteer. If a comm leader says they need helping posting daily reminders or asks for help organizing prompts, etc., offer to help. Being part of the behind the scenes infrastructure means you'll be talking to a couple people regularly, which is a good way to make friends. But if you do this, make sure you're reliable. Don't offer if you're not able to do it.

This is also a really good way to go about it in real life. When you're volunteering:

-You're in a proud and confident mood because you're helping people, which makes you more approachable;
-You're with people who are more likely to be generous and forgiving anyhow,
-You're busy, you have tasks and a purpose, which keeps you from feeling awkward, at loose ends, or under pressure to actively socialize.
