Characters you appreciate now that you're older

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-04-15 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm watching Justice League on Netflix, and it used to be, as a kid, I only liked Wonder Woman. I still like her, but I can't believe how much I appreciate J'onn, Jon Stewart, and Shayera now, particularly the last two. GL always bored me to tears as a kid and I skipped his episodes, but holy moley, he's way more complex than I gave him credit for.

Actually, same. Him and J'onn. Also: Aquaman.

I'm not sure how I feel about Aquaman yet. I can appreciate they wanted him to be more of a badass, but he feels very...Namor. I'm a bigger Marvel fan than DC, so it sticks out.

The Last Unicorn

When I was a kid, I thought Haggard was pure evil and Molly was mean (due to that rant when she first sees the unicorn). Now, I strongly identify with the both of them.

...Quite depressing, to be honest.

I definitely identify with the Molly thing. Although I didn't resent her for the initial meaning, but rather for snapping at Amalthea for twisting what Schmendrick was doing with Haggard. I don't know why. Maybe because Amalthea was so pretty and faint and sad I felt like she didn't deserve to get yelled at. I appreciate Molly a lot more now.

As for Haggard...I always saw meaning in that one speech of his. "I like to watch them. They fill me with joy. The first time I felt it, I thought I was going to die. I said to the Red Bull, 'I must have them! I must have all of them, all there are! For nothing makes me happy but their shining, and their grace.' So, the Red Bull caught them. Each time I see the unicorns -- MY unicorns -- it is like that morning in the woods, and I am truly young, in spite of myself!" Christopher Lee really killed that role. I heard they were going to do a remake. I wonder what happened with that?

Nooooo...there is no need of a remake.

Before I started on my big fuckoff DCU project the only character I actually cared about was Batman.

Now I'm less interested in Bruce than I am in folks like Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, any Earth-based Green Lantern that isn't Hal Jordan (especially Guy Gardner), the extended Bat-family (especially Nightwing and Spoiler,) the list goes on.

I even like Superman more nowadays, once I started reading the Supes books post-Our Worlds At War.

"my big fuckoff DCU project" May I ask?

Re: Characters you appreciate now that you're older

It started out simple. I just wanted to read all the canonical Batman stories from Year One to the Grant Morrison stuff. Then I realized that DC's various books aren't self-contained, and by going through /every/ canon appearance, that meant I was going through the crossover events (like Legends to start with) as well as his Justice League International business. Before I knew it, I was reading on average 10 comics, half of them not Bat-Family related, just because I liked the characters. I never would've gotten into Green Lantern if not for Guy Gardner in JLI and my getting into Kyle Rayner's tenure around the time of Zero Hour.

Thanks to this project, I've read through 20 freakin' years of DC continuity. Funny how these things tend to spiral out of control in terms of scope. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Speaking of comics, I'm getting more into Marvel comics and I've gained a huge appreciation for Kitty Pryde. Growing up I didn't really like her in the main version I saw (X-Men: Evolution) and I always thought her power was pretty boring. Then I read the Joss Whedon run of Astonishing X-Men, and now I love Kitty.

Those are the two incarnations of Kitty I'm most familiar with, too, and she's just utterly wonderful.

I occasionally rewatch episodes from the DCAU too! I remember generally liking almost everyone except I somehow forgot completely about Shayera turning traitor and then coming around again. I have no idea why I forgot that. I also remember my brother's disparaging comments about Shayera before she turned traitor because he was completely against turning a male character female and he was talking about "filling quotas" and how she didn't belong, blah, blah, blah. I used to think he hung the moon so I didn't like her as much as the others. Now that I see it with fresh eyes I really appreciate her.

Jon has always been one of my favorites, though. I'm glad you like more now too. How far have you gotten into rewatching it?

Well go rub his nose in the mud, because Shayera is <a href="http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Shayera_Hol>from the comics.</a> I'm nearing the end of the second season. I do remember the betrayal, but not the details, and I'm actually kind of excited to see what that was about. I think I actually missed those episodes when I was a kid, come to think of it.

Turning a male character female? Did he mean Hawkman? Because Hawkman also shows up in the cartoon.

Uncle Owen from A New Hope. I used to think he was mean and didn't want to Luke to be happy. But, yeah, once I got older I could see that he was just scared for Luke and wanted Luke safe.

Also Inigo Montoya - I was all about Westley when I was a kid and in my teens. But there is something much more appealing about Inigo now.

Oh and the Question from JL and JLU (god I love the old DCAU). I didn't really 'get' him until I was in my mid-twenties.

I feel the same way about Uncle Owen. As a kid I was all "This guy sucks!" but eventually I came to see that he was being protective and reasonable.

Aw man. This just reminds me of how jelly I am of yonder American netflix for having DCAU shows and movies.

Okay time for the lameness entry to this thread. Blossom from the Powerpuff Girls bored me so much, and I just didn't find the character likable. Now I find her precocious and quite awesome :|a Buttercup > all fo LYFE though

If it makes you feel better we still don't have Batman: the animated series.

Everyone in The Philadelphia Story

I didn't really get that movie when I was younger, but now I love it to death

I started a new play-through in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for the first time in about seven years. Now I'm really interested in Bastila and Juhani. Teenage me used to think of them as annoying and a non-entity.

I also wish that they'd kept Juhani as a romance option. Or at least done more with her.

Juhani is awesome. Bastila is pretty cool too imo, but I love Juhani. When I first played the game I wasn't a huge fan either, but I liked her well enough. IDK what it is but I know in subsequent playthroughs I always found her more and more interesting.

I wish there were more romances in general tbh. Carth is one of my favorite BioWare romances but a romance with Juhani or Canderous would've been kickass. I'm glad BioWare games have more options now.

Late-seasons Buffy. I still hate all seasons of Willow, though.

Valerie from Danny Phantom. Probably the most complex character on the show, original too, kickass without being sexualized, a young woman of color from a poor, single parent home portrayed in a positive light. You don't see many women like Valerie on tv but I didn't realize this when I was a kid.
