Just like Shinji in Evangelion, MANY people seemingly get Squall wrong. But as soon as someone is reclusive and not immediately opening up to people, he/she is a dick. While Shinji suffers from depression and Squall is just trying to protect himself from getting hurt again, both things are something a lot of people apparently don't want to see in a work of fiction.
Of course their relationship starts quite weird because Squall is trying to push Rinoa away and she tries to find her way in to find out what happened to this guy. It's easy to think there is no spark at all, but if you look out for it, there are actually a LOT of little piece of interaction way before the "Eyes on Me" scene, that hint toward it.

Only if you actively choose for there to be, though. There are also numerous dialogue/thought options the player can pick that suggests he's the opposite of interested and there's nothing even remotely like a spark...
...But come disc two shits on your choices and forces the romance anyway.

But then again, I've come to love the Laguna/Raine ship a lot more in the past ten years and I wish there was a spin-off about him :(

(Anonymous) 2013-04-16 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)But yeah, I find most people apply the usual RPG tropes to FF8 characters when a huge point to the characters is actually, "This is what really happens to kid soldiers." Everyone except Rinoa and Zell in the main party? Has some kind of pathology. Include Seifer in that, by the way, who has similar issues as Squall, but he EXTERNALIZES instead of INTERNALIZES.
Quistis places a huge emphasis on her career's success, probably thinking she wasn't "good enough" for the people who adopted her and then gave her back. Selphie is a cute, energetic psychopath who thinks the extreme is the answer--her first solution to President Deling was to blow him up with a rocket launcher. Irvine flirts, but it's obvious he's not really entirely serious about the relationships--why would he be when he probably thinks most everyone will end up moving on and he'll be right back where he was? Better to enjoy the moment. Zell turned out okay because he was adopted young and kept by a loving family--which is why he creates such whiplash in comparison to the party.
Rinoa has her own problems, but not nearly as much as Squall, Quistis and Irvine. But then I always got the feeling her mother didn't die in an actual accident, and it was more or less what her father told her to soften the blow--that Julia was actually murdered to get at Fury because he was a high-ranking officer and political figure who rose quickly.

You're SPOT ON about all of them. Each and every character copes in a different way and Squall happens to shut himself off.
The way people have reacted to Squall in the past just shows that the extrovert ideal (as presented by Seifer's way to cope) is still more accepted, than being introverted. It's just that there are different reactions to what these characters have experienced and I think it's actually great that Square took the approach to show it.
