Inadvertent terraforming! The alien ships were shot down/sabotaged down to the earth, and the terraforming machinery started acting in an uncontrolled manner, meaning spiky mountains, and these things called Hellbugs that are awesome (OK OK I have a warped sense of awesome). The spiky mountains do play an important part in the major climactic battle in the pilot, though.

CRANK THAT DVR UP BB!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! :-D
