Break from Fandom?

[personal profile] 30_rock_office 2013-04-16 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anyone else just felt the need to step back from fandom? What did you do during your break? Did you go back?

I'm just curious because, for the first time since I knew what fandom was, I haven't been on tumblr or read fanfiction in a while.

I took a break when I realized I was literally forcing myself to write, and that I hated every minute of it. After being fairly productive for almost ten years, it was a little bit of a shock. :) So, I stepped back for almost four months.

Mostly what I did was hang out with friends and travel. Quick one-day drives over long weekends, tourist hot spots. My house was never cleaner, I knitted so many hats, and I never saw so many concerts or plays. It was pretty much a fun catch-up time for me, and I was actually able to get back into fandom because I missed it. So...taking a break isn't a bad thing, in case you were worried. It's a pretty normal cycle, I think.

Yes. Frequently. I just step back and don't interact anymore. Don't check those sites or interact. Sometimes you just need time away to breath and refresh.

I took a 2 year break from fandom - busy with work, school, and working on original stories. The only fandom activity I participated in was Yuletide. Sometimes it's good to step away from the internet echo chamber. I'm not all that into fandom now, except that somehow I've developed an interest in writing Sherlock case fics (procrastination?) and I visit fandom secrets (obviously).

Yeah,, I did... I guess I'm still kind of "on break" since I don't read fic or anything but I started coming to f!s again. For me it was that I got really serious about my acheivement at uni, and so i had less time but... fandom also just started seeming much less important/serious in the grand scheme of things. I'm not really sure what that means, or if it's an accurate feeling or not. There was a secret a few days ago which made reference to fandom being a childish thing that you can grow out of, and I'd like to believe that's not true but I have to admit there does seem to be a tendancy for people to grow out of it...

Once did, was absent for four months (from AO3 and ffn). I still read f!s, though. Can't really stop doing it.

I tend to go through cycles. Sometimes I'm super into reading ALL THE FIC ALL THE TIME, and then I back off for awhile. I'm usually more active about seeking out fandom-y things when I first get into something new, then after awhile I need a bit of a break. The breaks are nice sometimes, since they give me time to recharge my ability to tolerate wank, lol.

Sometimes. I'll go through periods (be they a few days, weeks or months) where I don't read much (if any) fanfic or get too involved in fandom. Usually I still read/watch/play whatever I'm currently interested in, I just take a step back from the fandom aspect of it.

That's still fandom though.

Reading fanfic and such? Yea. But still, if you're barely involved in it when that's not what's normal for you I think it can still be considered a break. Of sorts, anyway.

I don't see how still watching tv or whatever is fandom though. Lots of people read books or watch tv or play games without ever reading fanfic or looking up fanart or searching tumblr.

fandom != fanfic
fandom != fanart
fandom = tumblr? Fuck no.

I take breaks if I feel like I'm getting too caught up in silly things or fanfic and I need to focus on my own writing for awhile. I also took a huge step back from one fandom because it suddenly became all about a kink that really squicked me, and I ended up forgetting about the fandom for a long time.

When I got into Star Trek fandom, I decided not to read any fic for the rebooted version while I was working on a lengthy fic of my own in that canon, so I wouldn't inadvertently swipe ideas or fanon or anything. And I was too busy writing like a rabid beast to read fic in other fandoms at the time.

...I kind of never got around to actually reading any after it was finished either, and then when I got into some other fandoms, I was used to not reading fanfic, so I never looked at fanfic for them either. I've written a good bit of Tiger & Bunny stuff, and have read practically no one else's fic, and I think I like it that way. This way I know that even if what I write doesn't wind up really unique or original, I know it came entirely from me.

I don't know if it counts as a break, though, since I've been producing fanstuff. Just not consuming it.

Yeah, sometimes I do. As for what I do...it depends on big a break I need? Like...there was 2 years I was completely out of fandom, and just...yeah. No reading, writing, talking to fandom friends for a couple years there which I needed.

Other times...I just take a few days and completely shut off from fandom to recharge.
