Massive earthquake hits the Iran/Pakistan border.

[personal profile] mekkio 2013-04-16 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
How big was it? It was felt 1,500 miles away. It was the largest in half a century. 38 casualties so far have been reported.

Can we have one day, just one day, where the only way people die is peacefully in their sleep? I could handle that.

While the earthquake's epicenter was in a thinly populated area, the USGS estimated that about 400,000 people live in areas where the shaking was very strong to severe; 1.7 million live in areas where it was considered strong; and another 2.6 million are in territories where it was classified as moderate.

That's massive! I hope there aren't many more casualties.

Can we have one day, just one day, where the only way people die is peacefully in their sleep? I could handle that.

That would be too easy.

Statistically speaking, it is impossible right now.

Well, this sounds horrible, but at the very least it was a natural disaster as opposed to a mass shooting or genocide or something. I still feel awful for the loss of life, though.

It doesn't sound horrible because I think I understand how you feel because many people feel this way.

A natural disaster is dangerous, unpredictable and quick but it doesn't have that "boogieman" factor that a man made incident like a bombing or a mass shooting has. Like an earthquake can be understood because it's part of nature. There will be floods. There will be hurricanes. There will be earthquakes. All of which are neither evil or good. It is what it is. However, a mass shooting? That's evil. That's a monster striking. And we, as Humans, respond more to evil than to things that are neutral.

Yeah, and I was just thinking, if I had to die suddenly I would probably rather die in a natural disaster than being shot to death by a murderer or even from a horrible disease

That's understandable. With natural disasters, there's danger and tragedy, but not malice. The earthquake doesn't wish anyone harm; it's a natural phenomenon with harmful results. It's not something that could have been avoided if one person (or more) hadn't chosen to be awful.

Yea, this. It won't make the deaths any easier or less sad, but at least there was no malice in them.

Holy shit. I hope any F!S peeps in that area/with family in that area are alright. Also hoping the casualties won't be high. :/

The world is too big with so many people, there will never be one day. There's always someone being murdered, tortured, kidnapped, shot, massacred.
