Since you don't really seem that happy with the situation, maybe you could work on those people skills. I know it's not easy for some people, but they are skills and can be learned and improved upon. And some people will respond in kind if you just make an effort (not everyone, but some). Ask questions, try to show you're interested, but be careful not to be too intrusive. When someone offers you a personal story, offer one back. Make people see you as a person with feelings that they can relate to, not just part of the anonymous working mass.
