I hope this turns out to be something people like! ♥
African Painted Dogs
- Painted dogs are also sometimes known as "Cape hunting dogs", "African hunting dogs" and "spotted dogs" despite not being a species of dog, and instead they are more of a wolf-like animal.
- Painted dogs are not domesticated dogs that have run wild, but rather a distinct species that evolved separately from other canids. Their scientific name (Lucaon pictus) translated from Latin means "painted wolf-like animal".
- Painted dogs have been shown to mourn for deceased pack members.
- Painted dogs allow pups to eat first after a kill and will bring food back to any pack member that, due to injury, illness, or "babysitting duties," cannot participate.
- Painted dogs used to roam regularly over much of Africa, their range extending to thirty-nine countries. Now there are estimated to be fewer than fifty-five hundred painted dogs in all of Africa.
- When a pack member is injured, the rest of the pack will take care of it, bring it food, and lick it's wounds until it has recovered.
- Painted dogs have increased from 350-700 animals in Zimbabwe thanks to a program started by Greg Rasmussen.(Info quoted from: Wildlife Heroes - 40 Leading Conservationists and the Animals They Are Committed to Saving)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 01:24 am (UTC)(link)If you don't mind, I'd love to see some reed lemurs. Or any lemurs that aren't ring-tailed lemurs. And any small rodents, particularly bats. But I'm excited to see whatever you post :)
Re: African Painted Dogs
I'll do some research on both of those, and see what I can do! :D
