Hello everyone. Starting today, I will be doing a multi-week "theme" of sorts; endangered/threatened species. I have a list of some that I am going to do, however, if anyone has any requests, I would love to hear it! I am trying to stay away from the "big" edangered/threatened species, such as elephants/rhinos/pandas, as most people know about them and know of their status, however that doesn't mean that any particular subspecies of those three will be ignored. :)

I hope this turns out to be something people like! ♥

African Painted Dogs

  • Painted dogs are also sometimes known as "Cape hunting dogs", "African hunting dogs" and "spotted dogs" despite not being a species of dog, and instead they are more of a wolf-like animal.
  • Painted dogs are not domesticated dogs that have run wild, but rather a distinct species that evolved separately from other canids. Their scientific name (Lucaon pictus) translated from Latin means "painted wolf-like animal".
  • Painted dogs have been shown to mourn for deceased pack members.
  • Painted dogs allow pups to eat first after a kill and will bring food back to any pack member that, due to injury, illness, or "babysitting duties," cannot participate.
  • Painted dogs used to roam regularly over much of Africa, their range extending to thirty-nine countries. Now there are estimated to be fewer than fifty-five hundred painted dogs in all of Africa.
  • When a pack member is injured, the rest of the pack will take care of it, bring it food, and lick it's wounds until it has recovered.
- Painted dogs have increased from 350-700 animals in Zimbabwe thanks to a program started by Greg Rasmussen.

Awwww! :D

They're really cute, even if I'm sure they want to eat my face.

Yeeeeees thank you! Can you do a feature on otters and whales? I'm thinking something like the hairy-nosed otter and the shepherd's beaked whale, but they might be "too rare" as only a handful of sightings of them has ever occurred in history.

If I can find pictures of them, I'll try, but if I can't, or I can't find that many, I might have to make a mixed post. I hope that'd be alright? :3

That's perfectly fine! If you're looking for more rare animals, maybe take a look at species endemic to the Pacific/Oceania area? A lot of animals from there are seriously threatened because of the introduction of foreign animals like rats and cats and loss of habitat. Oceania has a lot of colorful birds too, like the guam micronesian kingfisher, which should easily make the cut for cuteness. :)

I actually have a book that I'm using for the first couple of weeks, including some from that area, but I will definitely add that kingfisher, and keep that in mind!

Adorable! I love the one getting weighed <3

If you don't mind, I'd love to see some reed lemurs. Or any lemurs that aren't ring-tailed lemurs. And any small rodents, particularly bats. But I'm excited to see whatever you post :)

Me too. <3

I'll do some research on both of those, and see what I can do! :D

Seconding the lemur request! I know that ring-tailed lemurs are the ones most people think of when they hear "lemur," but the bamboo lemurs and the sifakas are so pretty.

Also, behold this ridiculously cute creature, the very endangered Leadbeater's possum:
