Probably offensive t-shirt: to buy or not to buy?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
So basically there's this T-shirt that says "Abortion: it really brings out the kid in you" and the inner sleaze in me secretly loves it (which is ironic considering i'm not really "for" abortion. i just realize it as a necessity, basically, and generally prefer not to get pulled into the debates).

ANYWAYS! I'm unsure whether or not I should buy it. On one hand, I do find it utterly hilarious, but on the other hand I don't really want to wear it outside and get harassed. Not that I can't take a few snide remarks, but I usually try not to be a troublemaker.

I have tons of offensive shirts, but I think this takes the cake, even for me.

I don't see the point in buying a shirt that I won't wear outside, so if I buy it chances are I will. I'm just really wondering if I should.

Would you?

I find it faintly amusing, so I wouldn't buy it myself, but if I did think it was as funny as you do, I'd totally get it for an "around the house/laundry day" shirt. Or a nightshirt.

I wouldn't; I don't particularly like the joke.

I totally laughed, but I also have an inner sleeze. As for buying it, I'm not sure. I'd probably go for it and just be sure to only wear it certain places, but sometimes it's hard to judge how people are going to react to jokes like that.

I wouldn't wear it outside. It could get you seriously harassed and could be pretty hurtful to someone who's had an upsetting experience with abortion themselves.

OTOH, I laughed.

Actually, I think desensitizing abortion is a good thing.

How so?

Make it less taboo, less something to be ashamed of.

diff

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
The stigma and shame surrounding abortion need to go, but desensitizing it isn't the way to do it. Many women have abortions because something went wrong with a wanted pregnancy. I know someone who did, and it was like losing a child for her. Even when there's no shame, there can still be hurt. There's no way and no need to desensitize that.

Either it comes out in the open, and people have to deal with it, or it remains something shameful.

Yes, and the best way to bring it out in the open is dead baby jokes apparently?

You know what, I'm absolutely going to agree with you on this one. Abortion shouldn't be shameful, but that's no reason to be flip and cavalier about it unless you're an asshole who doesn't care at all about other people's feelings.

Getting pulled into the debate is probably inevitable if you walk about wearing that, so unless you're buying it just to wear around the house and/or in the company of people who you're absolutely sure won't invoke that discussion, I would save yourself the 20 bucks.

I have a hard time buying stuff (that isnt pajamas) that I wouldn't want to wear outside. It's not expensive though so if you REALLY want to wear it around the house (or under a jacket idk) I guess it couldn't hurt your offensive shirt collection.

Also: I laughed.

Do it.

WEAR IT EVERYWHERE

I wouldn't. But that's because the "joke" reminds me of the time my cousin had a miscarriage at five months.

If you generally prefer not to get pulled into the debates, don't buy it. It's like wearing an invitation to debate the topic.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Only buy it if you're prepared for the kind of reaction you're going to get from people.

Keep in mind some may start debate with you, some may be very upset by it, and some may be angry with you.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-17 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I did quirk a smile at the joke, but it's not something I'd wear. Because, well, what if someone in public saw it and they had recently lost a baby? I'd just feel really bad for hurting someone for something out of their control, however passively.

And if I did see someone wearing it I'd think they're a bit of an asshole? It's fine as a graphic online, but irl? Situation dependent.

If you're gonna wear something like that, you're putting your inner sleaze on display for everyone to see. If you're okay with that, then buy it. But otherwise, I wouldn't.

Not if you're going to wear it outside. It's generally bad to look sleazy.

There is absolutely no way you could wear that outside and not get harrassed. I mean, in the very least, you'd get a lot of side-eyeing.

I don't think it's that funny. And you say you don't like to stir shit, so why stir shit?
