I don't know - speaking as someone who would be thrilled to end up with six kids, the term 'childfree' never bothered me. Childless is what I, and anyone who isn't a parent, am by default - it's a description of state.

'Childfree' means you don't want children. It's like needing different words for the concepts of 'virgin' and 'asexual'.

(Granted, I've never ventured into the communities of which you speak, and I'm sure Internet Childfrees can be just as aggravating as Internet Atheists, Internet Vegetarians, etc, but that doesn't mean the group as a whole is evil.)

Well, like I said earlier, I don't want children myself. I guess I don't see the point of coming up with a label for it, I'm simply someone who doesn't want children.

Also a point, and there's something to be said for not coming up with a label for everything.

Maybe it's just my personal experience clouding things, but 'childless' feels like a kind of...melancholy term. Like children are something that you are lacking. If I didn't want children, I would feel odd putting it that way.

I use the term "childfree" because "childless" to me sounds like I'm missing something in my life, whereas it is an active decision in my life. Just because there are some assholes does not mean the rest of us need to come up with something else to call ourselves.

Virgin: Any person who has not had sex.
Asexual: A person who, by personal choice, does not want to have sex.

Childless: Any person who is not, at the present time, a parent.
Childfree: A person who, by personal choice, does not want to have children.

These seem to be the definitions as I've seen them used, here and elsewhere, anyhow. But if you view childless/childfree as a meaningless distinction, nothing wrong with that either.

Virgin: Any person who has not had sex.

Celibate: A person who, by personal choice, does not want to have sex.

Asexual: A person who is not attracted to other people and does not wish to have have sex. However, alot of asexual people have sex with their partners anyway. The way closeted gay people might have sex with people of the opposite sex.

Asexuality is not a choice any more than any other sexuality. The word you want for this comparison is celibacy.

If you're the same anon from above, sorry - I thought your response was due to the notion of the term 'childless', and I'll freely admit to not being accurate with the sexuality side of the analogy.
