Most of my self-inserts were just me hanging out and chillin, too. I didn't have a lot of friends as a teenager, so me & the characters would sit around McDonalds drinking shakes and talking about their latest adventure/record/whatever.

Eh I'd say that isn't abnormal as most people have gone through a phase in their childhood where they imagined being part of something like that. Sure there's a lot of self-insert porn but I remember most of my fics that never ever saw the light of day and were self-inserts were just me getting to do a load of cool shit with my favourite characters. I was just there as an additional character. Often I'd do that annoying thing where you re-write entire scenes only with you in it. Granted I was doing this at an age where I didn't even realise I was actually writing fanfic because I didn't know what fanfic was...

Anyway, you won't be the only one anon. That's all I wanted to say.

Hey, most of my self-insets are usually just side characters or bystanders to the main story and serve almost no purpose to the whole adventure other than to give out questions to the the main characters and see canon events from a new perspective. There's nothing wrong with having a non-main self-insert. :)

Aw. That's cute. Did you guys ever pick a name?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! If I recall correctly it was, uh Robert Ryan? I liked Robert because it was the actor's name, and it means 'bright fame' and is the name of several famous authors so the Doc would be all over that in-universe. Ryan was just because of the alliteration. XD

Hehehe. I like it.

I wish my fantasies when I was a kid were innocent like that.
philstar22: (Janeway)

I used to love him back in the day too. Though I didn't end up shipping D/7 because I found their relationship too mentor-like. I liked the idea more of him as a father figure for her. But he was an awesome character regardless.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I totally get that, because I saw Janeway/7 as mentor/pupil mother/daughter, and all my fandom friends ship it like fire haha. I guess I just like how Doc and Seven were in a really similar place developmentally--they're adults, very intelligent, but still new to all the social and relational stuff. It was a great dichotomy to me.

This made me smile. One of the things my friends and I loved to do as teenagers was basically play 'let's pretend' and roleplay ourselves in our favourite shows and games. Voyager was a big one for that. So you're definitely not alone, and kudos on your choice of setting and character BFFing.

Aww, that's really cute. Most of my self-insert fantasies/fics from my young teenage years were me being bffs with B'Elanna Torres (we'd hang out in engineering and save the ship together), which is kinda funny now that I think back on it. :D

This secret made me smile!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
That's adorable.

And tbh, I only write self-inserts in my head (also known as daydreaming, i guess), but they're usually pretty gen. It's like I just can't stand breaking up my OTPs even to put myself in there. So I end up just like befriending all my favorite characters.

OP, you are the cutest.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
It may be redundant at this point, but that's really cute.

Also, I always shipped him with Kes, but I could see him with Seven too.
