I've never played any Sims games, but depending on the base bodies (and faces) they're given, I think I get what they were trying to say. The common facial features for people of African ancestry are different than those of the average Caucasian, so if the Sims sprites (idk what they're called) have more typically "white people" features, using dark skin tones might look more like an odd palette-swap than like an actual black person. Certainly once you have people of mixed ancestry, all bets are off, but I think that was what the OP was trying to say.

Unless the Sims games let you change out the facial features of your Sims, in which case I have no idea.

They do (at least 3 does...I don't think the original did, and I've not played around with 2 at all), and they have one of the better systems for it I've seen.

2 and 3 let you change the features to a point. If you have an unusual nose, it can be difficult to replicate. (I have an upturned, broken nose, and my boyfriend has a very prominent bridge. It's SUPER hard to make noses that look right. We're both WASP-y, though.) My "me" Sim in Sims 2 looks a lot more like my "me" Sim in Sims 3.

Yeah, I can understand this. I don't play the Sims so I don't know how well that can turn out but I have tried to make not-white-people in some of my games before and if it wasn't impossible it was really, really hard. Not because the skin colors weren't available but because the facial structures weren't cooperative.

Yeah. I find noses to be the worst. Try to give somebody a large nose and you get something that looks like the Penguin, or a caricature of Bob Hope, or, if you're lucky, Lois Griffin. Try to give them a flat one and you end up with an orc...

I know jawlines are the ones that seriously bother me. Probably because I spent who knows how long (hours?) trying to get this person's face right and it just wasn't happening. I ended up hiding it with hair.

In Sims 3 (and even 2 to a lesser extent) you have A LOT of face sliders to mod pretty much any facial feature you want. That's why I'm side-eying if OP plays either of those games. You can easily give your Sim features that don't look ethnically Caucasian. Even if you suck at using the sliders, many of the premade choices for eyes, noses, mouths, etc. do not look ethnically Caucasian.

I have something of a disdain for the stock features available and love constructing my sims.

My problem is, left to my own devices, my sims are going to always end up in approximately the same looks because of my preferences.

TS3 (and it was an even worse problems with TS2) struggles to render dark colors on organic 3D shapes smoothly. They tend to come out looking all striated and crappy. I remember going to extreme lengths with my image files to try to make nice-looking really dark TS2 skintones, and never being entirely happy with the results. (I'm sure it's better or worse depending on the user's graphics card, monitor and settings.)

Out-of-the-box Sims 3 characters have been nicknamed "puddings" in some circles because of their rather blobby generic appearance; I think they're optimized, not to look Caucasian per se, but to be unspecific enough that they won't look too absurd no matter what skintone you put on them. The game does have pretty good face controls, and yes, it's possible to make Sims that look somewhat more ethnically distinct than the presets, but much harder to make one that completely loses the bland "puddingface" effect. In my experience you really need to mod the game to do that.

Yeah, I had a lot of trouble making really dark-skinned sims in both, but the facial features were nicely varied (more black hairstyles in TS3 would be great, though). I abandoned a True Blood set because I could not get Tara's skin tone to work properly and Lafayette's was only barely ok.

If you have problems finding good hair, it's worth the time to go hunting on mod sites, the Exchange (though downloading sims there usually results in you downloading a whole stack of random and not always great CC), and if you're willing to pay money for it, the S3 Store.

Oh man, I remember the whole "stripey black person" issue from TS2. Hated it. So hard.

A lot of games have lighting issues with dark skin even if the textures display all right. My Shepard in Mass Effect is constantly fading into the fucking background. They're expecting a dark backdrop to contrast with the skin and it's Just. Not. Happening. At least throw in another rim light or SOMETHING, guys.
