The unfortunate thing about AI is that it's not about programming them to be smart, but believably stupid. A computer can be coded to behave perfectly in combat. Always out of the way, always in safety, etc, but that wouldn't be challenging. They have to dumb it down enough, but it's really easy to fail miserably because they're specifically coding in stupidity.
