I don't hate it - I like them as friends, but have trouble seeing them romantically even with the stuff in the game.

That's Naoto, right? Depending on how Naoto is portrayed, I tend to like that ship. They're pretty cute together? Besides, it's hinted at in canon; I'm sure that accounts for some of its popularity.

Probably not since I don't actually hate the ship, but I can't see them together romantically either.

TBH I think I'd also be a lot less hostile towards if the series didn't throw them together in a way that felt like it was pairing the oddball spares, just to make extra sure they were as comfortably ~normal~ as possible.

Also that so much wank surrounds the ship, whether it's Naoto's gender and Kanji's sexuality, or the extremely embittering drama that kanji/naoto shippers spearheaded on the kinkmeme.

It's not a dynamic I'm really fond of anyway, but between the game and fandom it's not something I can enjoy at all.

Honestly I think a lot of it is they're a (hinted at in) canon gay, trans*, queer whatever couple. Totally radical, fight the patriarchy, etc. Gets a bit old, sometimes.

Personally, I just think they're cute. They have that calm/hotblooded and adorably awkward dynamic that seems pretty popular in other pairings in other fandoms, too.

Yeah, I really like Kanji and Naoto, but separately. Don't really mind the ship itself, though, since in my side of the fandom it's not overtly abundant unlike the Western one.

I think the appeal is in their stunted anxious inability to articulate feelings at any time ever because they're 15, I'd say almost anyone can relate to that pretty strongly.

I figure people appreciate that they go against gender norms or something. I personally didn't care for it either. I only played the vanilla version and Naoto barely acknowledged Kanji in there, and it seems like the Golden version has some pandering to the pairing?? meh imo
