Gotta kinda disagree on that one. I didn't mind the question of romance being addressed -- I mean seriously, why wouldn't a few companions develop crushes on the cool mysterious charismatic alien who takes them on amazing adventures? Magical Gallifreyan no romo pheremones? There's no remotely compelling reason to put a moratorium on ever trying out the idea.

And, to be quite honest, I think the opinion that "meeeeeehh! nooooo! icky! you caaaaaan't do lovey feelings stuff because it didn't happen befooooooreee when IIIIIIII was a kid and it's neeeeewwww and therefore it's wrooooooong!!!" is utterly ridiculous, narrow-minded, and actually extremely childish and immature (not that people who simple don't like romance in the show are wrong mind you, just the people who approach it in that way).

But there's a big difference between going "hey, lets touch on this idea a bit", and focusing a whole character arc on ~romance~. As if the actual adventures and ideas and characterizations aren't interesting enough for the audience to pay attention to or something.

Actually, given how much shipping wank there's been among sci-fi illiterate idiot teenage girls who you just know wouldn't give two shits about the show without the shipping, because they loudly make it quite clear they never pay a whit of attention to the 85% of amazing stuff in the episodes that has no UST-potential, maybe that's not as off the mark as it seems...

I wasn't referring to romance in general, I was addressing Martha's crush specifically.

Yeah, that's the one that bugged me in the show, because so much of her character's arc before the finale got kind of suckered into that storyline. Not to mention it seemed to be put in specifically in order to contrast her with Rose, which is...yeah.
