I just spent forty-five minutes tracking down this post with a detailed discussion of the Sentinel Dreaded Bonding AU: http://fanficrants.livejournal.com/10578085.html Unfortunately, while it does a good job of explaining what makes some Bonding AUs so surreal, it doesn't at all explain why other fandoms would decide to jump in.

Kinda the omegaverse of the late nineties, I guess?
