Where to start? The restaurants and inns and apartments that have signs saying 'Japanese only' or clauses in contracts that say 'no pets or blacks'. The extreme bullying of non-Japanese children. The crowded trains with a circle of emptiness around a non-Japanese person. The trucks driving around with politicians shouting through megaphones about how all non-Japanese people are ruining the country and need to leave. My co-worker, of Korean heritage but born and raised in Japan, being told to 'go home'. My half-Japanese friend, again born and raised in Japan, being condescendingly complimented on how good his Japanese is nearly daily, being denied housing, being denied work because customers and clients 'just aren't comfortable with someone who isn't really Japanese'. The stereotyping of all Chinese people as being criminals. The belief by some seemingly intelligent people that Japanese people are not a different race but an entirely different (and superior) species than the rest of humanity. Discrimination against indigenous peoples or, as I encountered more than once, a belief that indigenous groups like the Ainu people are something only found in history and no longer exist. Even though, you know, they exist (recognized by the government all the way back in...2008). Racial profiling is rampant - are you obviously a foreigner? or are you Japanese, but maybe a bit taller or darker than average? - get used to getting stopped in the street by police and having to prove that you have a right to be in the country!

And much more. Basically, if you can't pass for being fully Japanese, you're going to run into some level of discrimination. A lot of people seem to downplay the racism in Japan because it is rarely violent (although I did, unluckily, experience some of that), but it is pervasive and disheartening. I loved living in Japan - it's an amazingly interesting country, and I met so many wonderfully kind people. I'm often homesick for my life there. But the increased awareness, the longer I was there, of the huge amounts of racism and xenophobia was one of the main reasons I chose not to stay there longer.
