working for Gamestop?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm debating whether to turn my resume in to Gamestop tomorrow since they're looking for an assistant manager and I have experience (plus I have the recommended education level and major). But I was wondering if this was a good company to work for? I've heard awful things about them but everyone in retail seems to hate the company they work for lol. Anyone have advice?

Turn it in. Work for them. If they're terrible to work for, tell them to fuck off, and quit.

so long as you don't mind indentured slavery and having gamers for customers it shouldn't be too bad

my friend's SO works for GameStop and seems pretty happy, but it's not his only job and I think he just does it for the employee discount.

retail in general SUCKS but you gotta do what you gotta do, so I say go for it

Yeah, I worked as an assistant manager in a discount store. Retail really does suck. :< But I was good at it and managed to create a nice atmosphere and we had a lot of regular customers who seemed to like us.

My friends works there and loves it except for the first hour after the kids get out of school. She hasn't had any issues with the company or her manager. The only thing I've ever heard her complain about is that her district manager has been telling everyone to start pushing customers towards getting ready to transition to PS4 when it comes out which most of the employees don't like and is also counterproductive for the company. She thinks maybe Gamestop has an agreement with Sony about it.

Echoing that retail in general tends to suck. It can be a bit better or worse depending on the area, but it will always suck. And being the assistant manager can suck even more if you're expected to be the same as the manager when they're not around but to just switch over to being a regular clerk when they're there.

Yeah, when I was an assistant manager at my last job (but not my current one!), it was kind of super annoying when corporate would show up and talk to me like I was the store manager and I was in charge of everything, bluhbluhbluh. It's like c'mon guys, I'm not in charge here. :|

Retail blows. Go for it if you want to hate people though!

If you really need money and like games/could use the discount, then it might be not *so* bad. All my friends who've ever worked at a GS seemed to hate it though. Except for one friend who manages a SoCal store. *shrug*

No yeah, I've worked in retail for over six years, hahaha. I definitely know the cons of it. XD

my brother has worked there for three years and he absolutely hates it. However, he is a lazy slob who bitches and moans when he has to crawl his ass out of bed before 2 pm... so there's that. However, all his coworkers have the same attitude, though, and it seems to be that way throughout his entire district at least: lazy bitchy whiny man- and woman-children.

Also my brother is part of management at GameStop without having graduated high school OR gotten a GED so idk if I would really be concerned with having had the right major for it..

a friend of mine was an assistant manager at gamestop until recently, and it pretty much sounded like working there was the same as working at any retail chain - the doings of corporate rarely factored into the daily yay/suck ratio, she had shitty coworkers/managers and great coworkers/managers just like any other retail chain anywhere.

if you need a job, may as well, just consider that you may have a slightly higher chance than the normal retail slob of coming into contact with people trying to sell stolen games and consoles for cash.
