I have to agree with [personal profile] badass_tiger. Sounds like it was a stupid and horrible thing he did as a kid and now he's changed.

I also think it's funny* how he beat up homeless people, mugged people, and set things on fire but the only thing the OP is upset about is torturing animals.

*Not "Ha-ha" funny. Weird funny.

Because beating an adult up isn't the same as torturing a small animal.

You don't know if it was an adult he beat up. You don't know how badly he beat that person up. You don't know how badly he tortured those animals or even what those animals were. You don't know if what he set on fire was someone else's home or not.

There's a lot of assumptions here.

Can we just agree that all of it is shitty and drop this? I don't want to argue with anyone here.

"Beat up homeless people" - most homeless people are at least teenagers, and I'd pit a teenager against another teenager any day

"Mugged pedestrians" - considering mugging is about getting things from people with violence, I doubt he was mugging kids. Kids carry exactly nothing.

So...yes, we can assume things. And I assume that attacking a human being for any motive (violence, desperation, whatever) is a lesser crime than hurting a living thing for fun.

You really just want to argue with me don't you? Look, obviously we don't agree. I don't think you can make those assumptions. You don't know if the people could defend themselves. You don't know why he beat up those homeless people. It could have also been "for fun". I could go on.

We're never going to agree on this. Okay? I'm obviously not going to change my opinion that I think all of them are bad and you're obviously not going to change your opinion that the really only rage-worthy crime here was torturing an animal.

We can disagree. That's okay.

Okay. :)

But so you know, the post above was the first one I addressed to you--if you're being baited or argued with, that's a different anon.

Thank you.

I see. I'm sorry about that. With everyone being anon it's hard to tell you guys apart. I just don't like arguing about things that matter to me like we are in this thread because it makes me very anxious and upset. I was hoping to nip conversation in the bud when I said, "Can we just agree that all of it is shitty and drop this? I don't want to argue with anyone here." because I realized very quickly this wasn't going to be like a debate and I hate deadlock* arguments.

So yeah, I'm sorry I was harsh with you and mistook you for someone else. Thank you for responding and saying that you're okay with both of us disagreeing. That actually made me feel better.

*Deadlock meaning everyone has an opinion but no amount of sharing or discussion is going to change anything. It's only going to make people angry. An example of a deadlock topic would be something like abortion. Rarely have I seen anything productive come out of those arguments.

A repeated pattern or behaviour is worse than a one off.

I think there's a difference between beating up an adult and beating up a homeless person (adult or not). Homeless people suffer disproportionately from mental issues, malnutrition, assorted diseases, and probably a fear of cops/authority figures that make them even less able to defend themselves than a random adult.

Even if it was a mentally/bodily abled homeless person without a fear of reporting the incident to the authorities you're still targeting someone obviously disadvantaged and kicking them (no pun intended) when they're down. That just sits even worse with me than some dude picking a fight with another dude.

there's this weird defense mechanism people have where they assume victims of crime deserve it so that we don't have to acknowledge that the problem of unprovoked/undeserved mugging and assault exist. but that doesn't extend to animals, also part of a human superiority that assumes animals can't make choices or be naturally inclined toward violence. thus they are seen to be as innocent as small children. that's why we have Kick/Pet The Dog tropes. people consider a person's treatment of animals to be a somehow more significant and reliable way to judge them than their treatment of people. so mistreating even one animal, regardless of mental or emotional state, is enough to turn the world against you, even though you'd expect that evolution would generally turn our focus to the human victims...

That's one explanation. I think both actions are deplorable, personally.

But it appears he has changed so... I'm not automatically going to call him a despicable person.
