I used to get that a lot. Didn't bother me a bit, but my coworkers used to get so offended on my behalf. "I bet you want to slap that costumer, right?" "Uh, no. They were trying to be polite and obviously didn't mean offense."

Yeah, I'm a trans guy, so the "sir" wasn't what bugged me, it was the automatic correction and apology. Like, I laughed and told the guy it was fine, but he insisted on calling me "ma'am" the rest of the time I was helping him. (Which...ouch. I'm only 24, dude.) There weren't any of my other coworkers around when either incident happened, and I'm sort of grateful because...ergh, awkward. I get through it by looking forward to the day I finally pass as a guy /sigh.

That would add a level of awkward to it! I actually ID as genderqueer so I kind of get a kick out of it when kids ask me if I'm a girl or a boy or when people mistake me for a man.

I usually just let people go on with whatever gender they assume I am. It does kind of bug me when people go on and on with the apologies.

Haha, my partner's genderqueer and has said that the answer they'd give to "are you a boy or a girl" would be "no." (Which is kinda funny, because at one point, my friend's sister asked if I was a boy or a girl, and when I floundered for an answer (because I'd just recently started trying to socially live as male), the friend's boyfriend, who knew I was trans, answered for me with "yes." So that's been my preferred answer when I'm not actually passing and I'm quick enough to think of it :P)

Heeee! I used to think when people got worked up about the 'ma'am' thing it was silly, but then in my thirties i noticed i wasn't 'miss' anymore and...yeah, i was kinda miffed.
