Yes, writers never use characters as mouthpieces for their own opinions.

And clearly they never have ongoing plotlines with characters reacting to actual events and multiple points of view either.

So allow me to rephrase: what character says ≠ NECESSARILY what author thinks, and this strip has a lot of context to it which is, as other commenters note, being ignored.

Of course they do sometimes, but they don't always. I don't automatically assume that a character voicing an opinion (even if it's the main character) is giving the author's opinion.
