Re: SUSPECT IN CUSTODY

My thoughts exactly. It's so strange. People really are treating it like the US won a sports game or something. It's strange. It's not the fact that people are happy; it's the specific way they're happy. Like it's an opportunity to party. I don't get it.

I think it seems odd to me, because people were only killed a few days ago. It seems a bit... disrespectful?

Relief? I don't know, I could understand it in Boston, because the end of a massive manhunt keeping you stuck in your house all day is something to celebrate. I'm a little confused about how deeply personally invested the rest of the country seems to be. The guy did bad things, was probably planning to do more bad things, and it's good that he was captured, but...

I completely get how invested the rest of the country is, because I'm really invested. It's hard to put a finger on why, exactly - I think it's because the bombing struck such a harmless, mundane thing in such a dramatic and visible and almost personal fashion, and then the manhunt has been so intense.

The thing about it is, I understand celebration, it's just the kind of celebration that seems weird. To me, it seems more like emerging from a harrowing ordeal, and that's not the kind of thing that you celebrate by packing the streets with wild jubilation. I get why you would party, it's just the exact vibe of the party that's a little strange/

I think I understand. It's the belief of, "If it can happen there, it can happen here." And if the bad guys are running around and alluding the police then what hope do I have when what happened there happens here. So, when the bad guys are caught, it's like a collective sigh of relief that even if what happened there, happens here, the bad guys are not going to get away with it.

Americans have an interesting sort of empathy with each other. It's less nationalism and more like a giant family.

Relief. I mean, yes, there's a lot of drinking in Boston, especially SB, but the city has been under a lot of stress the past week. Boston has a lot, and I mean a lot of pride. This was a huge victory in a lot of people's eyes, because it meant the end to the terror and a chance at justice.
