Has anyone else noticed that secrets or general comments involving animals, especially the relative worth of animals, are particularly likely to explode?

I think that's true all over the internet, not just FS.

Yeah. Atories about, say, animal abuse or dog attacks get a lot of comments on Fark, for example.
