Ignore

".........within a big dysfunctional family..........."

....my workin progress will have an audience. Yay (Basically two big dysfunctional families who are rivals. Also some kissing cousins)

I'd be into that. Screwed up family dynamics are my favorite topic in fiction. Awhile back I saw this macro about writing that was like, "Make all your characters orphans!" and I remember, "No, why would I want that? Give 'em a big complicated family and all the problems that come with it."

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I have both orphans and big families (my protagonists' parents die in the beginning of the story and they are sent to their father's parents and the huge screwed up family there. Of course while they are the main characters the "comic" version I'm doing now doesn't stick strictly to them. It shows what's going on with the gradparents' /father's extended family, with the rival family and with the protagonists' childhood friends.

I was a bit worried that people would see the orphan protagonist and also their orphaned , raised by grandparents cousin as being cliche but them being orphans came out of a peice of the earlier plot . I didn't decide to make them orphans just to have orphans.

LOL I love this secret so much.

I also think I might share your thing for cousinshipping, if only in this fandom. Maedhros/Fingon and Celegorm/Aredhel for me xD

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! And if you follow the tumblr fandom, Curufin/Finrod is apparently a thing now. I... don't really know how I feel about that, though I have read one really good fic.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, I've read some good stuff for that (though I've also read a few good Maglor/Finrod fics so I like that ship as well). I think that pairing started with a story on Ardour in August? I can't remember tho.

Also I have no idea whether they count as cousins (probably somewhere distantly) but I also love Gil-Galad/Elrond to death....despite how much I also ship Elrond/Celebrian (are they also cousins? Somehow?) Oh the woes.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the one I'm thinking about, probably. I remember reading and liking it, then coming back to the tumblr fandom after a few months and seeing people actually shipping that pairing now. Awesome. (What are some good Maglor/Finrod fics, you'd say? The best I've read was more or less Finrod-centric.)

Haha, oh man, this is bringing back all kinds of memories of when I was a wee tot circa 2004 and had Gil-Galad/Elrond as a proto-OTP. I practically lived on King and Herald. All the main Noldor players in the Second Age were related, and I love shipping it. Aside from woes over Elrond/Celebrian (and... Gil-Galad/Celebrian), I also agonized over whether I truly wanted Gil-Galad to be Fingon's son or not :|

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I just did a search on AO3 and there's actually more Curufin/Finrod stuff than I thought. Seems like it's flavour of the month right now! (I'm not sure, but I think I may have seen that Finrod-centric one. I'll have to wrack my brains).

Haha, I've perused King and Herald in my time as well. (I've never read/seen anything Gil-Galad/Celebrian...interesting). I came up with the compromise, 'Maybe he's Orodreth's son but Fingon's adopted son?' but I have no idea how plausible that is xD

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, both Celebrian and Gil-Galad are distant cousins to Elrond - they're all descendants of Finwë.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Guys, I'm really disappointed in this community. No links yet? No fanart? No recs? :(

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL but what are you looking for in particular? :)

here is a good place to start.

These two specifically for Curufin/Finrod

If it helps, I can post the most ridiculously WTF Maedhros/Fingon fan art I'd ever seen? I'm convinced I'll lose my mind and put it on tumblr one of these days, and get kicked out of the fandom permanently.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
If people knew what I discussed with close fandom friends I'm sure I'd be kicked out. Better posting it here, maybe? xD

My advice would be to get into some 19th century romances - all cousins all the time! Of course, it wasn't seen as dysfunctional then, but I'm sure you can make it work...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-20 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure I can :D One of my favorite works of literature is the Chinese classic Dreams of the Red Chamber, where the main romance is between two cousins. Maybe that's where it all started for me...

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Cousincest" is a thing now? Seriously? That's not even incest.

Does first cousins once removed counts?

http://youtu.be/0M6HWoAefsM

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Some definitions of incest are broader than others. In The Silmarillion at least, there is one instance of two elven first cousins (Idril and Maeglin) who are deemed an unsuitable match specifically due to their close kinship. It's sparked a lot of discussion in the fandom over "How close is too close?" since other "kin" pairs like the aforementioned Elrond and Celebrian (and her parents, for that matter) seem to have no problem getting together.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
You might enjoy Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber, Anon. Big horribly dysfunctional immortal multigenerational family who half the time don't immediately realize they're family. If you're into roleplaying, there's a gaming fandom too that just adds to the chaos. XD
