While this isn't precisely what I was getting at, it's also a very good point. If OP's friend suddenly got into horseback riding, or competitive ballroom dancing, or college basketball, or knitting, if they have an obsessive/passionate personality, then they'll be talking about horses or dance shoes or player stats or circular needles all the time, and unless one of those things is a hobby OP shares, the problem is not solved.

*raises hand* I'm that awkward intense hobby friend. I choose which hobbies to "broadcast" to which people based on shared interest, but if someone was annoyed enough with my fandom jabbering to complain about it to strangers online, I'd reckon they'd _probably_ be just as annoyed by my programming, crafts, or baking jabber too.

Although I guess there's no community you can post about that to, so I guess that's a win?

PS: DPNs >>> Circs except for two-at-a-time project, JUST SAYING.

Oh man, I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. It can be so incredibly awkward trying to talk to fandom friends who I haven't spoken to in a while. I just want to show them pictures of my awesome shawl, or bitch about how this yarn is totally splitting on me even though it cost $15 for a 110m skein, or how I made a mistake ten rows back but I'm not sure if it's worth frogging it all to fix. (To be fair though, generally the reason they're contacting me is to squee/bitch/commiserate over their obsessions that I'm no longer into, so it all works out in the end.)

PPS: I used to love using DPNs for anything knit in-the-round, but then I got some better circs and figured out how to do magic loop without it having a giant gap in the knitting where the rows start, and now... I-I'm sorry, but I won't go back!

Fuck yeah, magic loop! I hate DPNs and I'll never go back.
