It can, but it's NOT THE NORM.

My mom thinks I'm addicted to the computer because that's where I spend my free time.

...Nevermind that I'm extremely allergic to anything with pollen, I have a bum leg and I work 40 hours a week at Wal-Mart, so when I get home, I want an activity that's off my feet but can still be fun. As well, all my friends are off at out-of-state colleges, so this is the only way we can all hang out.

It just means that the OP may not fucking understand.

But the OP never said this was the norm. Zie said zie was observing worrying and tiresome behaviour from one specific person, that it's something beyond the norm is kind of the point.
