Why do you care if people ship your characters?

Because it would be once-removed 'shipping of their friends, obviously.

I wouldn't worry about it. Even assuming you get published and it gets widely read and all that, it probably won't have a sizable fandom, because as a rule, books don't really get fandoms unless they're super-massive-mega-popular - popular enough to get TV shows or movies, really.

Not to be a negative nancy or anything. It's just always offputting to me when people make secrets like this - the "I'm a writer and I am thinking about what the fandom for what the thing I eventually write will look like / all I want is a fandom / all I can think about is the eventual fandom". Write the fucking thing, and don't worry about a fandom that'll probably never come, you know?

God this so much. Those types of secrets are so common and tiring. What are the actual chances of any of these writers gaining such a large following?

Unless you know and use very specific details about those two people, no one is likely to recognize that you used them as a base unless you say something.

(Plus---unless you do know them IRL, tyou're technically basing it on their internet persona---which may not be what they're like IRL anyhow.)

Very true.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I do know them in real life, that's what makes it weird

ah ... well, then.

Keep them in mind, change enough of the inconsequential details to CYA. :p

I base characters I write on people I know all the time. The characters are never truly them. They were just the inspiration. If people read your work and ship two characters who happen to have things in common with two users I don't see the problem? It's not like you're shipping two real people?

To me this feels almost like the distinction between shipping characters and shipping character's actors. Maybe I'm off base but it seems similar.

Maybe you'll be lucky enough to get a fandom, or maybe you won't. There's no way to know.

If you DO though...people will ship no matter what. You can have these two characters love each other, hate each other, be related to each other...it doesn't matter, if there's a fandom someone will probably be shipping them. I say just don't worry about it, because it's out of your hands.

Sounds kinda like you ship them yourself, op.

Write the book before you worry about the fandom. Worrying about what happens after publication is a form of procrastination.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-21 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't ship characters I don't give a damnn about, you know. When I ship something, it means I'll spend money/effort/my undying love to them. It means the writer did a hell of a job, and I for one, I'll be forever thankful that they created something I love so much...

Don't treat fandom as if it is a disease, just saying.

(Yeah, there are always the nutcases on every fandom, but I would rather think of that fan that made a hell of a job with the canon source than focusing on the nutcases)
chardmonster: (Default)

You won't get a fandom.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-04-21 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
That isn't an insult, just saying that the odds of ANY independent creative work getting a fandom is tiny.

So worrying about something like that now is putting the cart so far ahead of the horse that they are in separate time zones.

Why don't you cross that bridge when you get to it?

Almost all of my characters are amalgamations of real life people I knew, pretty much
