Fleeting motivation/interest in just about everything?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-22 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
It seems that I can never stay interested or motivated in ANYTHING. My passions for things are always so brief. Fierce, but brief. For example, I'd discover something like a video game or a series or a educational topic or a new language or an educational subject like astronomy and would obsess over it completely, and then after a few months my passion for it would just die.

It's like this with everything-- friends, my education, hobbies, work, etc. I can never stay involved in ANYTHING, and once my interest in something wanes I just can't do it anymore. Like everything in me becomes repelled by it and I just HAVE to move on.

It's the reason why it's taken me so long to finish school and keep a job and stay in one place and keep friends and date anyone. My interest always, ALWAYS wanes. In everything, regardless how much I love it from the start.

I don't know how to just STOP.

Last semester I changed my major to psychology because I took two courses (the previous year) and was absolutely FASCINATED. I thought "this is it!" and changed my major and took some more classes and everything was fine...for the first semester. The second semester is almost over and I'm just bored. It's taking everything I have to concentrate in my classes and do well. I just want to quit.

It's like a switch in my head just went off. The topic is still interesting, but not interesting enough to put effort into. My concentration is absolutely shot, and I'm basically just trudging through.

I know I'm not depressed, btw.

Have you considered you might have ADD/ADHD? You've pretty much described me perfectly and that fleeting attention and obsession/fascination is something I've always attributed to my ADD.

this is weird... I have this exact same experience. I wonder if anyone will have any suggestions.

While I didn't take a long time to finish school, I started rushing through it after changing my major 6 times and then getting tired of it, and I hate keeping jobs for very long because once the spark is gone it's out like a snuffed candle. I don't get into relationships usually because I know I'm the same way with people, and it would just be unfair to them :\

I usually don't have this with education, but this is almost the same thing with me and my fanart. I usually get excited in the first few days, then I'll get bored and put it off for a few weeks, or months.

I know this doesn't help much, but I do hope you'll be able to get your interest back. :(

Google Cal Newport, and read what he has to say. It might change your life.
