Where are you looking, OP, 'cause I've come across plenty of spectacularly written RPFs. There are terrible ones, of course, but then there are plenty of terrible non-RPF fics, too, so.

Also: RPF is awesome. I suppose it's how you look at it. But I'm not going to get into this again 'cause this argument been exhausted.

RPF/S isn't awesome. It is creepy. You are creepy.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
IKR? RPF is so bad, especially when it tries to describe their day-to-day activities and relationships on the set. So embarrassing!

I'm trying to figure out what the pictures have to do with the secret. I mean, those dudes are in character there, just not the ones they're known for in fandom. Is anybody else confused?

The gifset's been put together to make it look like those actors live together.

Oh. That makes more sense. That gifset is pretty darn amusing. I'd read that AU fic/watch that indie romantic comedy.

I'm not a fan of RPF, but I think the gifset was actually very well done. I mean, if they were gifs from a movie trailer, I'd probably watch it.

cumberbatch's face is the stuff of nightmares my god

I am fucking dying laughing at this comment for some reason.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a gif crossover I've liked. (Including RPF ones.)

I've seen some that are pretty nice, but yeah, loads of them lack originality.

I like RPF (as long as nobody goes stuffing it down the "characters'" throats at public events).

But that dialogue is a big NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I LOVE RPF, which is probably the reason why the lack of quality fics frustrates me so much. I'm mostly annoyed that the vast majority RPF fics are AUs. I like RPF because I want to read about certain actors, not because I want to read about someone's student/fireman/coffeeshop owner OCs who share a name and looks with some actor. That's not RPF, that's original fiction. I suppose it makes people feel like what they're doing is less skeevy, but then they should just write original fic.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
That's original fiction to you but not to everyone.

Writers should write what they want to write.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 I write tons of RPS, some AU, some not. I don't consider the AU stuff to be original fiction because I try to weave in the RL people's personalities, quirks, etc. It's not just that they physically look the same.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Most of RPF is original fiction. People are basically using the actor's faces for their characters. But nearly no one admits it's original fiction. For most people it's RPF. Aaaand that's what's skeevy.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe they just want to write an AU. Personally, I've only come across AUs from prolific writers, which is probably because those are the ones that get bored with writing the same basic storyline every time. AUs in RPF are no more original fiction than AUs in other fanfic.
