Back To The 00's

[personal profile] morieris 2013-04-23 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a popular online topic; Cartoons were great "In the 90's!!", which I don't doubt, but rose colored glasses and all, and seem to have taken a downturn to many in the early 00's, with small revivals in shows like Teen Titans and Avatar.

To be honest, a lot of cartoons I look upon fondly are from that time period; El Tigre, Yin Yang Yo!, Filmore!, Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!, Butt Ugly Martians (Okay, maybe THAT one wasn't too fabulous, but I liked it)...they were entertaining and witty and I just genuinely liked them.

Any 'toons that you like against the general groupthink of "I hate the 00's?"

Does Futurama count? It's animated, but is more of a sitcom than what's typically thought of as a cartoon...

Hey, it's animated, I don't see why not!

What is it with decade / generation chat today? It's all 90s this and 00s that and favorite things from your childhood the other. Strange.

I kind of want to say it's due to last week being pretty horrific and people want to hearken back to a timeperiod that made more sense to them.

One of my tags on tumblr is 'someone please tell me about the 90's' - I should have used that somehow.

The 90's was really the golden age of cartoons, at least for NA. It was then when Nickelodeon was at the top of the ratings with its target audience, and you had newer channels like Cartoon Network and the like. The 00's were kind of the downfall of this, as they stopped taking risks and started making very generic, cheap shows. (The reason why Johnny Test still airs is because it takes so little to make, for example)

Because the 90's kids are now old enough to see the new generation being reached out to instead of them, so like the generations before them, lament the change and think back to the good old days.

Yeah sure, that's an eternal cycle and I get why the thing is happening in general. What I don't understand is why today, specifically, is the day for there to be a ton of threads about this (also, it felt at the time like a lot more, because a lot of the early threads seemed to be talking about it, and it doesn't seem so much like that now, so I feel kind of dumb).

Although also, it seems like people are mostly able to recognize that children's media right now is pretty great (cf amazing popularity of ponies); it's a gap between their childhoods and the present that they criticize

and let's be real, the 2000s were a fucking terrible decade

Justice League was the best cartoon. My whole family used to stay up and watch it every week

I really love Invader Zim, Samurai Jack, Chowder, and Poster's Home for Imaginary friends. :D

Also, Adventure Time started in the late 00's! (But it's still airing, so it might not count?)

I kind of dislike the generalized "00's cartoon style," but I think there are good cartoons in every era.

I knew I was missing so many...even if I thought Zim was okay and didn't really catch to Fosters, Chowder was awesome.

AT Can count - if it started between 00 - 10 and it's animated, it's cool!
starphotographs: Seriously, I grew up with these merrily demented drawings and poems and I like to think they made me who I am today. (The Loser)

I really liked Danny Phantom, but I can't remember when it started airing, so I could be wrong about that one's airdates.

Weirdly enough, I never actually watched that. I don't even know why. But I didn't watch Avatar while it aired new either.

People give 90s cartoons far more credit than they deserve. The animation did not age well and it seems like a lot of them hinged on having "zany" or "crazy" main characters/storylines and not much else of interest.

I loved Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Danny Phantom, Avatar, Teen Titans, Justice League Unlimited, Codename Kids Next Door... there were a lot of great cartoons in the 00s.

Hey Arnold has aged really well. Actually, it wasn't until I was older that I realized things about the show that I hadn't when I was a child (The emotional abuse of Oscar to his wife, Helga's parental neglect/her mother being a depressive alcoholic, the homeless people Arnold helped, the fake suicide episode, etcetc)

Yeah, Hey Arnold is one of those shows that I didn't really "get" back in the 1990s, but when I watched it again as an adult a while ago, it was a huge shock to me, how it handled so much mature subject matter.

Teen Titans was my first ever fandom (if you could call it that--first show I looked at fanart for, I guess) and, in my opinion, one of the greatest shows ever in the history of the fucking world. Early 00s were great.

I'm a high school senior and those years are about as early as I can remember. Anyone in my grade or lower who calls themselves a "90s kid" is full of it imo--just because you were born in the 90s doesn't make you a 90s kid. We were 90s toddlers at best.

I don't see much hate for the 00's but I agree that it had some good shows - some of which get lumped in with "the 90's" by people who like to bash the current era in favor of nostalgia, but started in the 00's nonetheless. Some cartoons from that era that I liked were The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Jackie Chan Adventures, Hamtaro, Sheep in the Big City (though not a kids' show), Mew Mew Power, W.i.t.c.h., and Naruto (which may have gone downhill but makes me nostalgic nonetheless.)
