Best school assignment?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just about to leave with my family and friends to go to a Chinese place for dinner. This wouldn't be special, except that it's so I can write a restaurant review for English class, instead of doing a droning essay about Shakespeare, in which I can come up with nothing new to say.

What's the best assignment, of any sort, that you've ever done in your educational career, F!S?

Anything where I could put my own creative spin on it through writing about my own world.

For an example; At a point in HS, we had to learn how to format newsletters. Most people dealt with flavor text, but I had a ton of stories.

It's hard to think of one in particular. I studied writing arts and radio/TV/film, so a lot of my assignments were fun. One of the best was probably when I had to start a blog for a class and maintain it throughout the semester. I was allowed to pick any topic I wanted, so I chose classic films and it really helped me connect with other people who shared my then-newfound interest in film history.

One of my college projects included a hotel management simulation game. that was one of the most fun projects I have ever done, and I know a lot of it was basically cause we won. By the end of the afternoon, we basically had enough money that we had run out of upgrades and could buy all the other hotels. It was pretty fucking great. It was basically like playing a really intricate version of monopoly and having it count for our grade.

I took forensics in high school and there was this one project where we were given this crime to solve. We were broken up into teams and were required to carefully examine the "crime scene" and all evidence, study motives, and so on. It was awesome because we actually sketched the crime scene and lifted prints (by dusting and glue fuming) and analyzed hair and fabric fibers under a microscope and worked through witness reports and so on. It also required researching some of the clues left behind, and basically it was just THE MOST AWESOMEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE.

Best yet, at the end of it we were able to write a story about what went on for extra credit. I wrote mine from the perspective of the murderer, and I'm not ashamed to say that it was rather good.

Anyway, that was hands down the best assignment I've ever had.

The time I got to review a (now former) friend's band.

Nothing single really sticks out, but I had fun with a few. I went to a Mexican restaurant for Spanish class, went to a play for English to write about, wrote and mixed music in high school. And astronomy, despite all the numbers, was a lot of fun when you actually got to observe stuff.

Also not a single assignment, but my one regret is not taking THIS class. Despite being at this school.

I am horribly uncreative and I hate assignments were the teacher is just like, "Do what you want!"

So my favorite assignment is either the 20 page paper I wrote in the 11th grade analyzing Robert Cormier's works OR the presentation+paper I wrote as a Freshman in college about prostitution. I interviewed like 7 prostitutes and 3 brothel owners (in 2 different countries). It was really fun.

My college Honor's assignment was fun because it required so much work. I did a study to see if there was a link between the World of Warcraft class a person played had any connection to their personality.

You can't leave us hanging, was there a link between classes in WoW and personalities?

Arch dig!

In which the class is split into teams. Each team picks a location and time in the ancient world and manufactures "artifacts" that came from it. Then you dig a big hole (we used the football field behind the school, all the sports teams were thrilled) and put your artifacts in it. You're assigned to another team's site, which you then have to dig up, make accurate recordings of where each artifact was found and the state it was in, and piece together where the artifacts were supposed to come from and when.

In undergrad biology, I got bored while listening to yet another punnet square lecture and designed a dihybrid cross to model chocobo breeding in Final Fantasy 7. My professor saw it and I eventually ended up experimentally testing the model and presenting my results to him for extra credit.

Edit: Also, mock election in high school social studies. The groups assigned to the two main (American) political parties were limited by the existing platforms, but I was assigned to the third party group and in addition to picking a home state and places to campaign we were allowed to craft a platform from scratch- and we totally gamed the system. It wasn't enough to win the election, but we earned a large enough percentage to deny the other candidates a majority and send the vote to the House of Representatives.

In English class, we were talking about Thomas More's Utopia (and the idea of utopias in general, I think we also read The Giver that unit). ANYway we had to come up with our own Utopia, a perfect city; we designed a flag, a song, I think, and we built the whole thing out of papier-mache. It had canals and boats made out of buttons, I was very fond of it.

For my biology class I had to do a CD track for cells and their organelles. I went all out using songs from my own library (which I thought was going to be hard) and making the covers. I called it Little Lysosome by Mumford and Cells with this as the tracklist.
Best time I had making the cover and stuff.

In fifth grade, after we read Bridge to Terabithia, we were allowed to pick partners and instructed to invent our own fictional world, complete with place names and a full color map.

For social work class I once had to spend ten hours volunteering somewhere; I spent the time making blankets to donate to kids in foster care. I thought that was a fun assignment.

I also liked some of the short story assignments I've had for creative writing classes; they were stressful at the time but I usually end up happy with the end result.

In AP European History, we had an assignment where we had to debate as different Enlightenment figures. I was Voltaire, and mostly just insulted the person who was Rousseau. It was awesome!

In college I did an extra-credit project for my food history class that was an analysis of food imagery in government and commercial publications during WWII. It was basically an excuse to apply my interests in vintage ads and vintage propaganda. I showed it to a family friend who is a restaurant critic and food historian, and he said I could adapt it and give it as a presentation at one of his food history events. Sure my professor really liked it too, but Richard Foss's approval on my food history project was SUPER AWESOME.

In terms of normal academic work I just think I did a really good job on- in high school, my essays on "To His Coy Mistress" and "Heart of Darkness"; in college, my essays on "Arden of Faversham", Brecht and Meyerhold, and my giant undergrad thesis paper on "Travesties."

Welll, in Elementary school we went on a field trip to a bakery. And made giant pretzels. That was awesome. 8D

For college, my research papers for HAP and Ecology: I wrote about Synesthesia and Fungal-farming ants and it was loads of fun. Also for Ecology, we went to a swamp and measured trees.

For our Women Studies project, my group and I went to a strip club. One of them put a dollar bill in her vagina and pole dance with it stuck in there. I tipped her handsomely for that.

When I was in eighth grade, for the first and only time in my life, I had to do a science fair project.

I had no idea what the fuck to do.

So the night before, I just sat around the back porch blowing bubbles and taking pictures of them, hastily wrote some stuff about surface tension, and called it a day.

Got an A on it!

Two small things (OK... one small and one incredible):

1) A speech about plagiarism => My first ever fanfic about 5 years before I've first ever heard about it at all.

2) Visiting the basement/storage levels of our National Library.

I wrote a 5000 word essay about the "One Does Not Simply" meme. The word limit was 3000 but I enjoyed myself too much and my teacher gave me free reign on the word count when I asked.

It was the best assignment I have ever done. 8D

I built a gingerbread castle for English my sophomore year of HS. It was part of a larger project on Arthurian legends. There were also essays and a few other art-based projects involved, all of which I enjoyed.
