So far I haven't been able to make much of it. There are some personal tumblrs I read and I occasionally come across a decent discussion with several commenters, but it's usually me coming across a post I might want to read a discussion about and knowing that out of 35,418 notes, 10 might be substantial comments and the rest will be "snapewife liked this" and "cherik4evah reblogged this". I'm not up to clicking "Show more notes" 700 times to find those 10 comments. It frustrates me.

the reason tumblr's so easy to get into is because there's minimal friction to it--you don't have to interact in order to enjoy it, and as OP said, a lot of people find it difficult to break into a fandom zone that requires overt interaction.

just because you can't properly tumblr doesn't mean it's the system's fault.

'start your own fucking meta' and 'you don't have to interact in order to enjoy it' seem to be contradictory statements.

I'm with other anon - if you come across an interesting LJ meta post, you can scroll right down and know there's probably debate on the subject right there for you to read.

Actual replies to tumblr posts are fewer and farther between, and not as well organized.

This is my problem with Tumblr. I love discussions that I could follow in a thread. Tumblr either results in insightful posts drowned by the same gif, or a post explodes to the point that no one knows who's replying to whom and it's just screaming back into the crowd at the same time. Intelligent contents can become inaccessible due to the format, right here.

Also, when I can follow a discussion because I'm following the feed of a particular user who's participating, every single new reply has all the old stuff repeated, and nested to the point it's almost unreadable, and it's very difficult to tell who said what.

Yup yup.

The way this particular secret made it all about eww teenagers has put me off it so much. But I just have to admit that despite of liking the majority of the people on Tumblr, the way that site works just makes me not want to have anything to do with it at all.

anon gave a perfectly legitimate opinion on not liking having to sift through a long list of "likes" to find comments by whatever means.

It has nothing to do with not "being able to properly tumblr." Some people just don't like the format.

Not everyone likes tumblr, deal with it.

Aggressive much? I enjoy tumblr for the pretty and occasionally I do find an insightful gem, but, as the other anon said, locating comments to said insightful gem is hardly convenient. tumblr would be a lot more enjoyable if there was a way to filter out the "so-and-so liked this" "reblogged this" and just leave the comments.
