SECOND EPISODE OF DEFIANCE THREAD

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thoughts? Best moments? Worst moments?

I was the capslocking-from-the-awesome-pilot anon.

Ehhbb I thought the whole Marcab Castithan non-interference in alien religions thing was a bit cliche. And I'm still not sure what to make of the former mayor; the pilot hinted at some well-organized plan, but the followup in this second ep was a bit confusing.

The alien languages continue to sound awesome and consistent (and they thankfully did not fall into the trap of overusing the one scatological analogue used by all races). Datak and Stahma (Castithan mob boss and wife) continue to be Fierce Evil.

The multiple threads from the pilot were kind of dropped, but eh, it's early days yet.

Ok, so...

I don't even think Datak is terribly attractive, but I find his look really... interesting (and that scene in the all white room... oooooooooohh). But he's not a very good guy. )-: Ots not that I don't ever like bad guys, but... not him; not really.

I kinda hope they'll introduce a major Castithan character who was easier to root for.

I'm all over how the Castithans look. I'm super attracted to them.

/this is all I have to contribute because I didn't finish the episode :(

Oh, good, it's not just me. (-:

Aww... do you know if you're going to be able to finish it?

Oh, yeah. It's just because I fell asleep. I'm totally enjoying the show so far.

Ah, ok.

Yeah, I'm really liking it, too. Though honestly, Nolan and Irisa, the two main character, are the two characters I find myself the least interested in. Nolan's too much of a Gary Stu, and Irisa... I dunno, she just hasn't impressed me all that much, yet. And while her interfering in the "cleansing ritual" was supposed to be a big "Hero" moment for her, it actually made me like her less.

I adore Stahma and find her intelligence and conniving nature fascinating; I'm never quite sure what she's up too. I like seeing her influence on Datak and I'm hoping that will continue in the future. (...It probably doesn't hurt that she's absolutely gorgeous and I could look at her forever.)

Now Datak himself? I kinda hate him, but the actor is doing a good job with the role and he's an interesting (though completely unlikable) character.

We need more Irisa involvement though! I suppose we just have to wait for that, but she wasn't in the last episode enough. (NGL, I might end up shipping Irisa/Tommy together. Love their scenes and Tommy in general.)

Still a bit sad that Nolan didn't get that threesome.

OP

That's what was missing from the ep! We didn't see the Need/Want at all, did we?

Nope, not that I can recall anyway. That place is wonderful; I hope we have many more scenes there.

(Which reminds me, I want more Kenya and Amanda scenes. The brief glimpse of their relationship in the pilot was really sweet.)

Better than the pilot IMO, but I quickly came to the conclusion that Nolan is likely the least interesting character on the show. In this episode he's mostly a foil for Rafe (with some scenes that Greene nails), Amanda, and Datak, who chews scenery like it's bubble gum.

Oh, good, it's not just me, then.

The problem I have with Nolan is that he's apparently derivative of so many different male western heroes that he's kinda like sci-fi western velveeta. Oh look, he has an adoptive interracial family like Josey Wales (Eastwood, who managed to fit in references to four different American atrocities), he starts off playing different factions off each other like The Man with No Name, then there's a touch of John Wayne's Rooster Cogburn (probably couldn't get the Portis/Coen/Bridges version onto SyFy), and then you have that last minute change-of-heart thing.

sci-fi western velveeta.

LOL!
Well, the term "cheesy" does seem to suit him. And not in a good way.

My biggest problem with him is that he's such a Gary Stu. Honestly, after everything ELSE we see him be really awesome at, when Kenya was all, "You're so good I'm not sure I should charge you!", I just threw up my hands and went, "I'm done with this character." Thankfully there are plenty of other characters who are interesting enough to make up for it.

SyFy shows the episodes dozens of times; if you miss the first showing it's easy to find another.

Still enjoying it quite a bit - they're moving a little slow but that's good - there's too many potential stories and way too much information to just dump it all and leap forward with huge plot strides.

I hope they continue to show us more *different* 'alien' races and customs, and yes - really want more Need/Want, and more of Adopted Daughter/Deputy, too! (I'm bad with names.)

A buried St. Louis is kind of sad. But interesting. Having Darla on my tv again is awesome. Mostly-naked mom embracing mostly-adult son was ever-so-slightly icky to *me*, but i'm glad they went there to kind of showcase the differences.

The little 'my betrothed was accidentally flushed out an air-lock!! tee hee' story should have set off big warning bells. BIG ones. Wake up, girly!

Good, good stuff.
