How do you make friends online?

So I've actively used forums and other places where I'm not anon for about seven years or so and haven't been able to make a friend* in that time and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I mean, I don't *think* I'm a jerk. I have some excellent friends in real life and we have a lot of fun online. Maybe I'm super uninteresting? Awkward? Don't reach out enough? I don't know what, but it's obviously something and it's kind of lonely.


*Defining friend here as someone you talk on a regular basis and do stuff with. I've made some acquaintances, yeah, but they seem to disappear off the face of the earth.

Come to f!s streams. You will make friends if you are a regular.

You have to make an effort to talk to people one-on-one (or in a smallish group). Give people you've had decent exchanges with on comms your IM info.

You don't have to be an uninteresting jerk to have difficulty making friends online or off, so don't think that. It can be hard and sometimes even if you do everything you think you should it just won't happen.

That said, imo the best way to make friends is just to talk to people. Comment, friend, follow, whatever. If you're interested in someone try to find common ground and keep in touch on a regular basis. (Even if it's only PM'ing them once in a while to ask what's up or to discuss a common interest.)

Fingal makes a good point too; most the people who visit the f!s streams seem to be close, so if you want to make friends there it should be pretty easy!
