It never ends. I work with someone like that. I'll tell them I have To Go There And Do That, so I can't do This Other Stuff for awhile, and they'll spend five minutes telling me all about all the stuff they have to do.

And I'll be thinking, I was just telling you where I was going to be and that I'll do This Other Stuff later (so you don't think I expect you to do it.) It's not a Whose Job is Harder competition, sweetie.

I've met people like that. It was a cry-for-validation sort of thing, and when we stopped being friends she went full-on pathological liar.

This current friend is just specifically about academics. I get the feeling it's because her university fosters that attitude overall. Her professors all sound like haughty assholes, and I wonder if she's kinda aware that she may end up like them...
